Out of the billions of people in the world our character is what really determines our success and is what guides our responses to any situation or circumstance in our life. When people have positive role models in their lives they become inspired by them and want to be their best selves. Influential people dedicate themselves and engage with people. These influential qualities make people stand out. From the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the main character Atticus reveals bountiful examples through his words, but more significantly through his actions. A character from Dead Poets Society, Mr.Keating is more like a friend then a teacher to his students at Welton Academy. One quality that makes people influential is that they have the trait zeal. This is someone who has passion, is willing, energized, and motivated. From the movie Dead Poets Society, Mr.Keating the boys english teacher displays many examples of himself being zeal. He was always energetic and acted like he wanted to be there. He is one of the boys favorite teachers in the school because of his style of teaching and interaction with the class. In order for someone to make an influence on someone else they must have something unlike many others. Mr.Keating would show up everyday and would not be thought of as a normal teacher. He would teach his lessons with zeal and is what made him unlike any other teacher in Welton Academy. He taught the kids many things, like how education is not about being well off but, how it simply making us better people. His classes are based on poetry in most cases. The class reads this poem called “O Captain, My Captain” and says “...poetry, beauty, romance, love… these are what we live for”. Atticus has a tremendous influence on his children's lives. Throughout the novel, Atticus teaches Jem and Scout the importance of courage, integrity, and justice. He not only gives his children valuable understanding of the community of Maycomb, but he also encourages them to become noble individuals. Atticus does not judge others but instead stands up for what he believes in. You need a lot of courage to be able to stand up for what you believe in. Atticus teaches his children a treat everyone fairly and to respect every individual. Tom Robinson, a black man on trial is someone that Atticus stands up for and his children learn from it. Atticus is explains to Scout how ‘"nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything—like snot-nose. It's hard to explain—ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody." "You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?" "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody... It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you"’(Lee 144). In this world today you may be scared someone does not think the same thing and they might get offended.
