Integrity is not necessary to be successful. This may sound like a lie, but in reality integrity isn’t needed. However, it is valued. Without integrity, no one would be able to trust one another. No one would be able to live without worry of being lied to or tricked. Integrity is what makes someone a good person which is why it is so important. An example that is widely known is Abraham Lincoln, also known as Honest Abe. His good values in business and in life eventually led him to becoming president (Leidner). Nelson Mandela, another person widely known for his integrity, stuck to his beliefs and helped end apartheid in his country of South Africa where he was president from 1994-1999 (History.com). Even after being arrested Mandela stayed true to what he believed in. Not only are these men great historical figures who exemplified integrity, they are looked up to. They are inspirational people, leading others to want to become like them. In turn, these people become more honest and ethical themselves, proving that people are taught to have integrity. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird has many characters that value and show integrity. Doing what is right, even though it’s not popular is seen throughout the book, as well as not listening too much to what other people say (Lee). The book shows people staying true to themselves, and because of that, they show integrity. To Kill a Mockingbird is regarded as a classic and is required reading for many students in grade school all the way through high school. If society didn’t value integrity as much as it does, or didn’t think it was important, the book wouldn’t be as popular as it is.
