In the counseling world, in order to be successful and effective there are certain skills, training and most importantly education that the individual must attain in order to make a difference and properly render help to those in need. I personally believe that in this field as professionals we have to always strive to provide top-notch services to the people that seek our help and services. How can an individual accomplish such traits? There are certain things that should always be taken into account and ethical codes that should always be respected and followed. She helped me deal with many mixed emotions that I was experiencing and showed me different methods that I could implement in order to be successful and not be stuck in the same rut that I was in. She help me find common ground and implement different solutions to my struggles. Mrs. Gonzalez, exhibited a great amount of empathy to my problems, she understood and identified with my experiences even if she didn’t agree with my choices. She was emotionally attuned to my needs and was still willing to help me articulate my feelings. Her listening skills were impeccable, she cared and payed attention, she was not easily bored, but gave me her undivided attention. As a teen, I was embarrassed, bullied and not very trustworthy of those around me. Kids back then were cruel, they figured since I was Hispanic, I was undocumented and should be deported, little did they know I was born and raised in Houston, but my parents decided to move to the south TX, due to the high demand of farmers and laborers.
