“To dance is to be out of yourself," Agnes de Mille famously proclaimed. I one hundred percent agree with that statement and I live it wholeheartedly. There is something so special about telling stories with the body and feeling that sense of freedom during performances. Trying to describe the way it makes me feel is almost impossible. Every step and every turn have their own purpose. Throughout my life I realized that dance was something I could never let go of, which is what intrigued me to apply to UNCG. Being from such a small town with such little opportunity was always a problem as I tried to pursue a career as a dancer. I had very minimal options for training and we very rarely had local shows. My dance teacher, Heather, Sanford graduated from UNCG with a dance degree. The knowledge she gained as a Spartan lead her straight to success. She is now a studio owner with a broad network under her belt. She introduced me to an instructor named Casey Noblett, who is well known for her success in the commercial dance world. After spending time at UNCSA’s Summer Commercial Dance Intensive last summer, I realized that I wanted to be a part of that world and in order to do that I need to attend a college that puts emphasis on creativity and performance. UNCG does the job. Building experience with choreography and having maximum stage time will play a key role in mapping out my career. My goals are lofty, yet achievable, I must start with a strong educational foundation, which will allow me to grow and make life-long connections. I desire to be in a place prepares students to take on their future careers. Though many dancers do not reach the level of success that they desire, I am steadfast on achieving my goals. One day I hope to be standing in a huge arena or on the set of a major music video, building a name for myself. The best expression of dance comes from a skilled and experienced dancer. Ultimately, I want to dance the dance of medicine in a way that fully expresses the essence of the dance, which is a dance of knowledge and compassion. A dancer that can take the music and choreography and express the essence of the dance, has an indefinable quality that only those with a pure love for their calling can possess. In dance, that special quality is what separates the average dancer from Baryshnikov or Pavlova. That aspect is one that intertwines unsurpassable skill with a focused relentless devotion to the task. Although I have danced since the age of three, I know I do not have this prima ballerina quality, but as a future doctor, this same kind of quality is what drives me.
The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
I have been dancing since the age of four. I started my intense training with Tanju and Patricia Tuzer, Debra Bale, and Linda Brown at Tuzer Ballet. I developed as a dancer, attending every summer intensive performing in every show, advancing from intermediate to apprentice to junior company and finally to senior company. Ballet has molded me into a person that smiles through hardships and lives for the daily challenges. Additionally, my ballet training allows me to put other things into perspective and is applicable to my academics. Often times, math and physic systems of forces, centroids and torque can be applied to ballet movements. For example, a simple pirouette (turn) is possible because of the torque the legs and arms create, the rotational momentum of the body, and the force the legs create against the ground. Furthermore, my ballet training is much more than leading an important role. Over the course of a thousand of ballet classes I have developed the ability to listen and attentively follow choreography. Also, the creative aspect of ballet adds a unique element to the way I think, solve problems, and view life.
I considered myself a performer, and after years training as a classical ballerina I expanded into stunting and tumbling. While on tour, I developed friendships and bonds with dancers strengthened by a mutual love for dance, a commonality over the pain our bodies endured daily, and conversations on bruised and broken toes.
I carried my passion for dance along with me when I transitioned into high school, and into college as well. My role as a cheerleader in high school aided in the maintenance of my physical and mental well-being. I felt most empowered when I was performing on stage, and when I was able to enthuse the crowd with my lively facial expressions and body movements. The partnership with the lighting designer usually takes priority over all other factors. One of the most important issues concerning customers has to do with mobility. The dancer must be able to move comfortably in the costume. The task of producing a dance concert is an overwhelming and tiring one. Chapter twelve dance in education and career in dance, many dance educators present the argument that teaching and learning dance as an art form is obviously absent from the American student education. I have been a dancer since the age of 3. My earliest memory of dance was when I was too terrified to go on stage during a recital and I refused to go on no matter how much they tried to push me. Up until the age of about 12, dance had been just a hobby or an extracurricular activity. In fact, I didn’t even enjoy going to dance. I didn’t have friends there and I wasn’t that good of a dancer. It wasn’t until I participated in Dance Bermuda’s summer dance intensive in collaboration with the American Ballet Theatre in 2012, that I realized that I had a passion for dance. At the program, I was exposed to other dancers that were my age and older and most of them were much more advanced than I. So to avoid being the worst dancer in the program, I took to YouTube and watched hours and hours of dance videos. I researched all the ways to improve my ballet technique. I can remember trying to practice my pirouettes in the kitchen and falling onto the table and knocking a whole bunch of things over. I was determined to be as good as the other girls in the program. By the end of the two weeks I was fired up, motivated, and ready to get back to class after the summer.
