“To dance is to be out of yourself," Agnes de Mille famously proclaimed. I one hundred percent agree with that statement and I live it wholeheartedly. There is something so special about telling stories with the body and feeling that sense of freedom during performances. Trying to describe the way it makes me feel is almost impossible. Every step and every turn have their own purpose. Throughout my life I realized that dance was something I could never let go of, which is what intrigued me to apply to UNCG. Being from such a small town with such little opportunity was always a problem as I tried to pursue a career as a dancer. I had very minimal options for training and we very rarely had local shows. My dance teacher, Heather, Sanford graduated from UNCG with a dance degree. The knowledge she gained as a Spartan lead her straight to success. She is now a studio owner with a broad network under her belt. She introduced me to an instructor named Casey Noblett, who is well known for her success in the commercial dance world. After spending time at UNCSA’s Summer Commercial Dance Intensive last summer, I realized that I wanted to be a part of that world and in order to do that I need to attend a college that puts emphasis on creativity and performance. UNCG does the job. Building experience with choreography and having maximum stage time will play a key role in mapping out my career. My goals are lofty, yet achievable, I must start with a strong educational foundation, which will allow me to grow and make life-long connections. I desire to be in a place prepares students to take on their future careers. Though many dancers do not reach the level of success that they desire, I am steadfast on achieving my goals. One day I hope to be standing in a huge arena or on the set of a major music video, building a name for myself. It would be an honor to call myself a Spartan, and I know that because of my history of hard work and my dedication to my craft, I will be able to reach my
