My decision to pursue a career as an Anesthesiology Assistant is hinged on three factors; first, a desire to advance in the healthcare sector and be able to take up higher responsibilities in patient care; secondly, an intentional process of building a healthcare career that would be personally fulfilling and rewarding; and thirdly, embarking on a career path that will enable me to integrate my prior education, experiences and skills, and use them as a backdrop for effective care delivery. My undergraduate degree is in Psychology. I undertook studies in this area because I had always had a deep-seated desire to help people recover from adverse situations. At the same time, I trained and work as a medical assistant, which has enabled me to have a lot of patient contact. Growing up, providing care to the sick has always been a calling and not just a job. I was only 14 when my father was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and I had to skip school to take care of him. I was all he had at the time, and the care I provided came from within, from the heart. My duty was to help him feel well again, unfortunately he passed away 3 years later and his dead left me seeking for a compassionate and fulfilling purpose. Since then, I have cared for broken men and women in various recovery homes within our Church – Victory Outreach International, home and abroad providing Counseling and health aid to many. It has become vivid after two years of working as a Combat Medic/ Emergency Technician within the Military (Army National Guard), that my calling is to love, nurture, and care for others.
As a result, I was promoted to a Patient Care Technician in a heart failure unit. In the meantime, I continue to multi-task in a fast-paced environment where I am responsible for twelve to sixteen patients and practice proper techniques in the unit. I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. Overall, anesthesiologists must be highly educated in both medicine and communication, they need to be able to give the patient the right amount of medicine as well as speak with the family of patients and other doctors to inform them all with what will be done during the surgery, and they need to be able to properly assist the surgeons during operations.
In high school, I was among those students who always indicated that I will be going college. However, unlike most people I seem to meet these days I did not know that I wanted to be a doctor. When it was time to head off to college, I was still unsure of what I wanted to pursue. As most college freshmen, I did not know what major best suits my personality. I desired a career that would define who I am and a career that is self-gratifying. However, the path that I should follow was unclear to me. Because of my uncertainty I failed to see that my parents dream became my reality. As I began my college experience as a nursing student, I felt somewhat out of place. I realized that my reason for majoring in nursing was my parents' influence on me. They wanted me to believe that nursing is right for me. Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.
My main contribution is to focus on the kidney disease and hypertension population to enhance patient outcomes. After many years of being in this profession, my first long-term goal will be to become a nursing instructor. Like many instructors who do it to pass on their knowledge, I want to be able to give back to the nursing community in some way.
