Recommended: Academic and personal achievements essay

To Mr. & Mrs. David Jarvis, Thank you for reviewing my application for the Jarvis Scholarship, I am thankful for your time and your generosity.
Taken through Texas Tech University, I would use the scholarship funds to help pay for the summer classes that I plan to complete for my junior year of high school. It would go to 1 of the 5 classes and the textbooks that I will have to purchase for the classes that I will be required to take in order for me to successfully complete my junior year.
I reason that I deserve the scholarship because I work hard in each and every one of my classes, I study and contemplate how I can do better on tests and other academics that I am involved in. I also deserve the scholarship because I am dedicated to …show more content…

I have been a part of the Lockney Literary Criticism team –a UIL team that focuses on English terms and analyzes poetry and literature, where I have advanced to Regionals both my freshman and sophomore year. I have also maintained an A average for both English electives for the past two years. I am involved in my school’s yearbook, where I weekly write articles to the Floyd County newspaper –The Hesperian Beacon and put together the school’s yearbook. As I mentioned before, music is another one of my strengths. I have proudly been involved in the Lockney Band since the year 2011. It wasn’t until 2015 that I was a part of the Lockney Longhorn Band, which included marching and UIL competitions. For my first year of marching, we did Blood on The Captain’s Sword, and had received ones for the performance. In the spring, the Longhorn Band attended the Wayland University festival and also received straight ones. As for my second year, where we preformed The Wizard of Oz, we received straight ones and straight pluses. This past April, we made another appearance at the Wayland University Festival and received straight ones and a sweepstakes for the 18th year in a row.     “Opportunity is missed by most because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work” –Thomas Edison. I have had to struggle to get where I am today, and there have been times that I thought I would not make it to my senior year of high school. My life would almost replicate the location of a natural disaster to some. I broke my arm this past October and had to undergo reconstructive surgery, everything academics wise fell out from under my feet. After having surgery on my arm I repeatedly missed school for occupational therapy, which is a form of physical therapy. On top of my arm, I had just gotten my job back at Arby’s. By November I was working anywhere from 20-35 hours a week with school, a broken arm, and OT. I had no time for anything, not even sleep. When I was at school I could barely keep my eyes open, it eventually got to the point that when I was able to attend a full day of school I would sleep during some of my classes so that I would not fall asleep at work that night. I have worked harder in this last year just to make it through, than I have in the last four years to keep my grades up. I work every night now, and my arm is a little more healed than it was when I first started my job, but I still have limitations as to what I can do as a human being. Throughout this essay I will cover these three major points; the most important thing that I have learned in high school, why the scholarship will make a difference in my educational goals, and how I hope to make a difference in the community with my career.
