Nearing the end of my high school career, it is imperative to commence thinking about my future career and jobs to withhold for the rest of my life. The possibilities of careers are endless in this generation as new, innovative ideas blossom from old ones. After examining my options, I have concluded that a career in Biology, with a focus on Neonatal Surgery, will provide a successful and fascinating future for me. After researching this job, I collected information on the certain education and training I need in order to pursue my career. According to Health Assistance Partnership, Neonatal Surgeons retain a salary of “about $468,797 on average per year.” Responsibilities they perform for the patients, from newborn to late youth, include: diagnosing, treating, transplanting organs, and performing other surgical procedures for him/her. Caring a warm lighthearted personality is beneficial when working with children and families who remain in the situations immense enough for their children to require surgery in order to survive. I absolutely love the pure enjoyment of working with children. Connecting to the children, in these situations, is a key component when caring for them in order to understand how they may react and feel in certain situations; however, as surgeons, we can not attach to the patients and grow close to them because of certain regulations in order to ensure the sanity of the surgeons. To know that one has made an impact on a child makes a twenty-four hour shift at a hospital or studying for a board test worth it. Just like the rest of the world, pediatricians strive to make an impression. Their legacy is the hope inspired in every sick or suffering child’s heart. At the end of the day, changing a child’s life for the better is the greatest reward any pediatrician can receive.
Medical procedures are a common part of life and elicit a great deal of anxiety among people of all ages. Anxiety is defined as a “diffuse apprehension that is vague in nature and is associated with feelings of uncertainty and helplessness” (Townsend, 2009, p. 15). Children experience high levels of procedural anxiety because they do not understand what to expect and they fear the pain they may experience. I was therefore interested in researching whether the presence of parents during painful procedures decreases anxiety in pediatric patients. My desire to someday work with the pediatric population has intrigued me to further understand the importance of this issue to best meet the needs of the patient and family. The topics to be discussed include the benefits of having parents present during painful procedures, the disadvantages of having parents present, and doctors and nurses attitudes regarding the presence of parents.
A great deal of emotions occur in the postpartum period, emotions that you could never understand unless you have been there. Before I attended a conference on depression in pregnancy & postpartum the thought of fathers suffering from postnatal depression never even entered my mind. As far as I was concerned, It was only associated it with giving birth. The knowledge I gained has not only changed my outlook on the subject but the way that I interact with and educate my patients. My focus is no longer just on the dyad of mom and baby it’s on mom, dad and baby if there is a partner involved at all. When my patients are of similar race or age range, I feel a stronger tide towards them. I feel they could relate to me and me to them during treatments. One case was an older Spanish patient which we had. I had strong counter transference toward this patient. He was older Spanish man, with a baldhead, and limping from a post-stroke. He was very energetic and had very high spirit. His personality and certain things he would say reminded me off my grandfather. After leaving the treatment room and coming back to give him a treatment he would be singing, which I though, “that’s is so typical of my grandfather, always happy.” I thought this man was adorable, having gone through so much and yet full of life. I felt very comfortable with him. I definitely felt I had some type of connection with him, I felt more sympathy towards him than other patients. Although, I felt this way towards this patient I did not express or demonstrate it. I kept myself focused and acted in a professional manner.
