Debate:
Should The Government Ban Hunting?

As the world continues to grow and develop, one of the many things that have we’ve done since we existed was hunting. Hunting is the practice of killing wildlife. It used to be that hunting was for subsistence. These hunters hunted for food, shelter, clothing, and overall, their cultural survival. There is plenty of evidence that suggests that humans have been hunting to survive for a very long time, and while we may live in the twenty-first century, some cultures still hunt to survive. Despite this justifiable reason for hunting, nowadays, many hunters are not subsistence hunters – they hunt for sport. While this may be a controversial topic for everyone and we all have our own opinions, I believe …show more content…

Later, it became a trade on a much larger scale. There are various parts of animals – ivory, fur, bones, feathers, meat, etc. – that are traded because of their value and many uses. Such products have been traded for millennia. It’s only in the past two-hundred years – give or take – that the excessive harvesting of these products have caused a widespread demand of them. Some species of animals have suffered grave depletion due to them bearing more valuable products. This leads to my point about several species in Canada being threatened by poaching and commercial hunting. But in reality, I’ve already mentioned my defense to this before. Smaller animals are the prey for predators – the larger animals. Trophy hunters are supposed to hunt the larger specimens. This disrupts the natural balance as said in my paragraph about the theory of natural selection.
Another good argument against my points is that those who hunt have licenses and know how to use firearms. They know what they’re doing. The majority of people who hunt do it for fun and sometimes with their friends. There have been many cases of people being accidentally shot, injured, or even killed while hunting. While this may be a fun sport, it certainly has a myriad of risks and responsibilities tied to it.
Hunting is a recreational sport that people enjoy, that much is true. But what of trophy hunting which cannot be justified with any ethical reason? Trophy hunters want the head of a large animal and often, nothing more. It is simply what the type of hunting it’s called, a trophy. The remaining parts of the animal is not often used and is left to rot, which is a total waste. This issue is more of an issue when you bring up the point of rare or exotic animals.
