We started by testing the time it takes for sugar cubes to dissolve in boiling water. We boiled the water to 100℃ and then dropped four sugar cubes in, each cube took exactly 1:03 to dissolve. After testing the boiling water we switched the beakers, which we kept the same size and filled it with room temperature water. The mixture that occurs between the salt and the water causes an endothermic reaction, which means that heat is absorbed. Due to the heat absorption, the temperature of the solution will decrease substantially. The cold pack experiment lab allowed us, the students, to apply theories learned in class to actual real life experiments; such experiments prepare us for future tasks the will be put forth to determine. For this experiment you have to have a basic understanding of Collision Theory to understand what’s going on in the experiment. Collision Theory is a model of chemical reactions in which a reaction occurs after a collision containing enough energy occurs between two reactant molecules. This model has five factors which can be affected and they are the nature of reactants, temperature, concentrations, surface area and catalyst. If one of these were changed then the reaction could occur faster or slower depending on what was changed.

The pain reliever has aspirin and citric acid in it while the antiacid also has citric acid but instead of aspirin the antiacid has sodium bicarbonate, which is also known as baking soda. The Alka-Seltzer tablet was first created by a chemist working for the company Miles Laboratory named Joseph Maurice Treener. (¨Who invented Alka Seltzer¨) Treener discovered that if he added sodium bicarbonate to aspirin it would create a tablet that works wonders to use as a medication to calm down troubled stomach acid.
This data indicates that with a bigger surface area, it took 16 seconds for the cap to pop off, whereas with an normal Alka-Seltzer it took 8 seconds. As a result of the time, we determined that with a bigger surface area, the speed of the solute dissolving increases. Another data indicates that with a higher temperature, it took 4 seconds for the cap to pop off, whereas with a cooler temperature it took 10 seconds. As a result, we determined that with a higher temperature, the speed of the solute dissolving also increases. These results do make sense because with a bigger surface area, the crushed tablet of Alka-Seltzer dissolve quickly because the vinegar molecules break down the Alka-Seltzer molecules easily than when the tablet is a solid. The other result do make sense because with a higher temperature, the molecules move faster, thus speeding up the process to break down a solute easily. One source of error may have been is that we could’ve put more vinegar in the canister when conducting the experiment. This error would have affected our data because if the seconds were wrong, then that can lead us to having the wrong time for each experiment, resulting we could have longer time than expected.
In this experiment my lab partner and I collected an unknown sample (sample A) and performed a series of tests and analyses to determine the chemical composition of the unknown. One of our learning goals was to practice performing the basics of analyzing an unknown; this entails measuring boiling point, melting point, and noting its physical properties (color, smell, etc.) In addition to this, we also practiced reading basic spectra, looking at and interpreting test results, synthesizing derivatives of our unknown, and testing the melting point of said derivatives to help us further identify our unknown.
