Do you believe that words have a powerful meaning and someone's opinion of you may hurt you like a knife? In today's world, many teens believe in what they hear or see on social media, news, and from their peers. The words we speak about someone else may do more harm than our action. Paris and Robert Strom’s study of “Schools have the right to punish cyber-bullies,” they define cyber-bullying as someone using electronic devices such as cell phones, e-mail, posting information on the internet, Facebook, chat rooms, instant messaging, and Instagram to threaten others. Teens are spending a lot of time on social media such as Facebook and Instagram (qtd. in Meech, 2009). Educators believe that social media is a better way for teens to do group activities and learn from each other. They can also learn from their classmates, practice new skills, and help each other with homework assignments. Social media makes it easier for teens to have access to their teachers for extra help when they are struggling. Unfortunately, social media affects students' academic performance and they are less likely to do their assignment. Furthermore, when teens are bullied, their grades are more likely to get worse throughout the school year. They are reluctant to get help from their teachers when they are failing. Even teens who are on an honor roll, will fall behind on their school work. Educators should take action to punish bullies who cause teens troublesome to even have the strength do their homework. Nancy Willard (2012) who is the director of the Center for Sale and Responsible Internet Use argues that cyber-bullying demonstrates that some incidents are emotionally related to school failure, school avoidance, violence at school, and sometimes youth suicide. Some teens cannot help to feel being a victim anymore, and they will eventually swallow pills or hang themselves to end their pain. Some people cannot handle being bullied online and simultaneously keeping up with their school assignment. Teens may try to force the brain to do it their way, but the brain will not be able to handle multitask. Social media distracts teens from paying attention in class because they are more focused on the people are disseminating rumors about them. They react to the circumstance the same way any reasonable person would if someone has taken control over their life, and they will trying to defend themselves.
