Dictators are able to rise to power in Nations that have suffered economic and political instability and tragedy. Dictatorial regimes are characterized by a lack of a democratic or republic government with one leader. Dictatorships have appeared all over the world at all different times and often lead to military conflict, poverty, and extremism. Many authoritarian dictatorships still exist today. These tyrants come to power using a variety of methods. They exploit this instability by gaining key supporters, creating an enemy, suppressing human rights, and using the previous governments to rise to power in democracies.

A dictator must secure the key leaders of a country. Dictators must do this because as political scientist, Bruce Bueno points out,” One man doesn't rebuild roads, enforces laws, or invade countries”(2:12). When dictators take control they must promise these keys to power some form of wealth to keep these people on their side. That is why in dictatorships the wealth goes to these key people to keep this dictator in power instead of the nation. Distrust in the current government by these key people is what allows a dictator to take over in the instability. However, USC professor, Alastair Smith argue that if tyrants pay their keys to power too much they could break apart a finance their own revolution(3). That is why totalitarians kill their keys to power the moment they become useless or unloyal. If authoritarians don't pay important supporters enough another aspiring dictator could offer to pay them more and take the seat of power. Moreover, Idi Amin used these rules in Burma. Political scientist,Mark Van Vugt, points out,” Idi Amin took over Burma by disarming the people and butting up the military”(7).He secured his keys to power in an unstable country. He used the instability to gain the support of the military which made it significantly easier to take over. In Nazi Germany Hitler was first elected as prime minister of Germany. Than, the people of Germany allowed him to become Fuhrer under the threat that the current government could not protect them. The lack of authority and the distrust in the government had in the Germany's economic ruin is what allowed for Hitler to take power with the support of the people. In addition, 21st century dictators have been able to find their power in democracy. Experts on the topic have expressed that regularly elected officials have demand power in order to deal with larger problems that are often caused by the government(Freeman). In Venezuela Hugo Chavez was originally elected into his position but sought more power in order to fix the country for the people. In his quest for absolute power in the country Chavez has justified his power in fraudulent elections.
