Probably before the Second World War, one can argue that the British Empire was more of an asset than it was a liability. This argument can be supported by the fact that British were the main reason the era of industrial revolution began. Among other things it is during this same period that there was a shipment of raw materials from the colonies that belonged to the British Empire into the British territories. The raw materials were used, in the manufacture of some of the finished goods that were used by the British citizens. However, things took a turn for the worst during the Second World War when the British realized that the colonies were more of a burden than that of a benefit. Further, there was the need for economic revival in Britain. What more, the country needed a lot of money more than billion to maintain the empire that by then need much support. In fact between the periods of 1942 to 1944, Britain need sterling pound 2 billion to reconstruct the British Empire (Van 1919). Not only did they need money for their empire but they also owned 3.5 billion sterling pounds to loans; money that they had borrowed to finance the Second World War.
