One of the main reasons that Rome rose to become so powerful was because of there army. At it largest, there were about half a million soldiers in the army! Only men were allowed to become soldiers, which there were two types of. Legionaries, who had signed up for 25 years of service to the Roman army, were one of the groups. If they survived there time in the army, they were rewarded with land that they could farm. The other type of soldiers were the auxiliary, who were the soldiers that were not citizens.
