Why Queen Elizabeth I did not marry? Some people say: “she married her country” well, of course, she married her country, it was her job and she didn't marry anyone else, but go deeper, what actually made her do it? Was it for the power? Was she scared? I couldn't settle with just one because I don't think a woman as intelligent as she was, just came up with that decision based on one single aspect. This is why I found three main reasons I believe in.

It is strategy because while they waited the Queen for an answer, they wouldn’t attack England. If a country that had a possible suitor attacked England, the possibility of getting married to Elizabeth would have dies, so this putted England in a great political position. Even if her decision of not getting married wasn’t mainly this, it was definitely a plus to her government.
Last but not least, she could have been afraid of marriage because she grew up surrounded by failing marriages. Her father for example, executed her mom and stepmother because of adultery when Elizabeth really young. Another example could have been her sister Mary and her failed marriage to Philip of Spain. I like this theory the most because I think it represents a human being, not some selfish Queen that didn’t married because she wanted all the power for herself. She was a normal women who was afraid of getting hurt in a marriage due to what she grew up to believe.
The reasons previously explained could perfectly work together and make up someone’s mind. This is why I believe Queen Elizabeth didn’t have just one reason for the decision she made and I think that choosing just one is not right because it must have been a hard decision to make and it couldn’t have been possible for her to decided this based in one aspect of her

In the novel The life of Elizabeth I, Elizabeth was known as the “The Virgin Queen”, because she never married. She was born on September 7th, 1533, Elizabeth was the second daughter of King Henry VIII, and the first was Mary. When Elizabeth was about 2 years old her father killed her mother for not having a male to take over the reign. King Henry VIII kept marrying until he got a male heir. His name was Edward VI, but died at a very young age. Mary I then took over and imprisoned Elizabeth thinking that she was plotting something. When Mary I died Elizabeth became queen at 25.
Elizabeth’s relationship with her elder male cousin, the Duke of Norfolk, was not good at all. The Duke of Norfolk wanted to kill Elizabeth because he wanted to become the king of England. Becoming the king of England was impossible while Elizabeth was still the queen. When Mary was on her deathbed with cancer the Duke of Norfolk tried to get Mary to sign a paper that would allow him to kill Elizabeth and become King of England. The Duke of Norfolk would speak against Queen Elizabeth and try to turn England against her. At one meeting she had to lock him and his men up so he wouldn’t cause a disturbance. They both had their differences.
However, he was perfectly aware of the people who did not want her to be the Queen. Despite this, she seemed to focus more on the loyalty of her subjects than her opponents in her speeches. For example, in Document 11 (an address to Parliament), she, unfazed by the skeptics who view her as weak and unable to rule, asserts her right to the throne, and that her only husband is the Kingdom of England. In Document 12, she is defiant in her stance towards Spain and Parma, even as their fleets approach the English coasts. She does acknowledge that she may be physically weak because of her womanhood, but asserts her determination to rule is that of a man. ...These characters all show traits of wittiness, determination and strength. The traits Queen Elizabeth expressed as she ruled England, a single woman taking on a man’s job. Shakespeare included these characters in his play because he knew the Queen would enjoy seeing characters that portrayed her; it showed a sign a respect towards her. The Queen supported the theatre and Shakespeare in his work. Shakespeare thanks her by giving her females characters leads in his play with characteristics of her reflected in them. Queen Elizabeth ruled throughout Shakespeare’s life so it would influence him in his writings. She showed him through her rulings that she was a feminist. She did whatever it took to get what she wanted and to rule her country, she showed fierceness and compassion. Shakespeare took these characteristics and portrayed them in his female characters.
As stated earlier, Arthur Miller does not explain Elizabeth to the reader as he did with the other main characters. He made his audience figure out for themselves who she was and what sort of personality she procured. Unlike all the others, she has to make a character for herself. By the time the reader finished the story, they knew her to be exactly what she would want. She brought her audience to know her as a woman of integrity; strong, eternal love; selflessness; and caring. She brought the readers to loving her almost as much as she loves her husband and her children. She brought them with her through her struggles and showed readers that a tragic hero does not have to be royal. One simply needs to dignify herself and make the audience love her.
The claim that Elizabeth is strong is indisputable. The strength of her personal integrity is highly evident in her refusal of Darcy's first marriage proposal. At the time, she believed Darcy to be arrogant and selfish, based on Wickham's account of Darcy's disgraceful behaviour towards him. She was also furious with him for ruining Jane's chance of happiness (through marrying Bingley). Yet, it would have been prudent for her, a girl with only £1,000 and 4% interest annually from it, to marry Darcy, whose estate is worth £10,000 a year. She never wavers, though -- "her intentions did not vary for an instant". The strength of her convictions and loyalty towards her sister made her reject his offer, and with it, probably all possibility of her every marrying "well" and securing a comfortable future. Also, she was not intimidated by Darcy's wealth and high social status, daring to tell him exactly what she thought of him and to risk his anger by offending him -- "You could not have made me the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it." It is very clear that Elizabeth's principles are uncompromisable.

Elizabeth was under tremendous pressure from the beginning to create a unified country through a stable religion, however even after the Elizabethan settlement the pressure had not dissipated as both religions in England, Protestant and Catholic were unhappy with the compromise. Elizabeth had gone ahead with the settlement as the factors of her religious preferences, creating a unified country along with a parliament who supported her drove her to do. This settlement however created dire consequences as Elizabeth was now under constant threat, many of the English people opposed her while two major powers watched from a distance. The Elizabethan settlement was definitely an important decision in history, as it would decide the outcome and future of England.
During this time period it was a great honor to be married to the family of a foreign countries monarchy. It was also a wise governing decision as it made connections and allies out of countries that otherwise may have been foes.
At the time of her birth, no one ever thought that Elizabeth would become queen of Great Britain. Elizabeth only got to enjoy the first ten years of her life with all the freedoms of being a royal without the pressures of being the heir apparent. She often took dancing and singing lessons.
