Although some people fear to voice their opinions because they do not want to offend anyone. There are times when topics that are controversial will come up, like politics and social issues. People discussing these topics help people grow mentally and help them grasp both sides of the argument. If one side is not allowed to voice their opinions then the other side would remain ignorant. The American Association of University Professors state that “On a campus that is free and open, no idea can be banned or forbidden. No viewpoint or message may be deemed so hateful or disturbing that it may not be expressed.”(172). This ruling shows that no matter what the idea is, it cannot be banned from college campuses. Also, the American Association of University Professors states later on that “An institution of higher learning fails to fulfill its mission if it asserts the power to proscribe ideas-and racial or ethnic slurs, sexist epithets, or homophobic insults almost always express ideas, however repugnant.”(173) If a college does outlaw some ideas then it has failed its mission. No matter how controversial an idea, people still have the right to express their opinions. In the end, students should be able to express their ideas no matter how foul it is, and it is the students’ responsibility to express their opinions
