The sale of cigarettes to the public began around 1865 , the legal age to purchase them has always been eighteen for the most part but this age is way too young. Cigarettes have highly addictive and extremely harmful chemicals infused within the product which are too strong for people under the age of twenty-one . If people were to start smoking at the age of eighteen, the span of having all the poisonous and cancerous chemicals in their body increases, which causes a longer period of addiction and harmful effects to the body. It can ruin peoples lives that still have a future ahead of them and eighteen years of age is too young to be addicted to something that can possibly destroy everything they wished or had hoped for. Accordingly, the body is still developing while people are in their teens it makes lung cancer more likely to become an obstacle in a smokers life because the immune system is not at its highest potential and is still weak. We want the young to aspire to success and accomplish something great or even change the world for the better, not be addicted to something horrendous. We need our bodies to be healthy in order to live a long joyful life. The harmful chemicals that are in cigarettes is one of the top killers in the world and by having the legal age at eighteen we are giving the young teens the opportunity to ruin their body and eventually die faster than one who smokes after the age of twenty-one .While the body is still growing, teens and youth are vulnerable to its deadly effects. Smoking decreases the lung function during late adolescence and early adulthood and is related to impaired lung growth, chronic coughing, and wheezing.
