In Western society, there is a common organization called Division of Youth and Family Services, more commonly known as DYFS. DYFS’ main goal is to create a hotline to act as a safeguard to children that suffer from abusive households. When children learn about this, they choose to call this hotline because of the fact that their parents yelled at them in a threatening tone or put their hand on them. Most calls that this organization receives is from children that are not actually maltreated but are just being taught a lesson. Children need to be disciplined if they are misbehaving at home, but in Western society, this idea is twisted to formulate the idea that children are being mistreated at home, which really is not the case. While the case listed above was an unfortunate event, imagine the children who do not exhibit such harsh behavior and still get overlooked? Many children who are exposed to violent behavior in the household tend to become numb and emotionally unavailable (Weithorn, Behrman, 1999). They do not have to show anger or be physically violent, some children seem to become silent, depress and possibly distance themselves from others. I had the privilege of interviewing a professional in the education field. Shayna Bennett- Givner is the director for Teenie’s Tot Daycare located in Pittsburgh. I wanted to get a first-hand insight on behavioral issues and how she has to deal with them with in her business.

The Wall Street Journal published an article by Victoria Ruan that was titled “In China, Not All Practice Tough Love”. In her article, she briefly discusses what we think of as typical behavior between children and parents in China. She describes the brutal relationships between children and their parents when it comes to schoolwork and being the best possible student in the class. Ruan states how in years past children have been pushed in their studies by their parents to the point in which children start to lose their individuality and love for “not so important” hobbies. According to Ruan, chinese parents don’t just push their children to extremes in order for their children to be as smart as possible, the main goal of this “tough love” mannerism is to ensure that their children have a happy and successful life. However, Ruan believes that in recent years we now have less reason to believe in these stereotypes about chinese parents and their children.
Across cultures, many times similarities lay within them that go unnoticed. It is true that obvious differences set them apart; but if a closer look is taken, it is surprising what can be found. The Chinese culture is obviously different from the American culture, but underneath the surface there are similarities. One of them is how the treatment of women has evolved and changed. Anti-feminism in China has been present since ancient times, and has just recently decreased. Anti-feminism in America has never been as severe as it was in China; however, instead of the value of women gradually increasing over the years - it has reversed. The value of women in America has decreased. There are many similarities between the ancient Chinese women and the modern women of America. Women in China and women in America have both gone through evolutions of how they are treated and looked upon; it is just that women in China have evolved, where the women of America have devolved.

The most common type of domestic abuse towards children is done through physical abuse. The inner communities of Los Angeles are a good start to find children who are dealing with physical abuse. African American parents tend to physically discipline their children. By no means is disciplinary physical abuse legal anywhere in the United States. The abuse is considered to be domestic violence and the child can opt to call the police and move to a government placed home. In the world today, children will accept the abuse and never retaliate. The cycle of violence will never end if children continue to endure horrific childhood experiences.
Throughout the decades, parenting has evolved resulting in altered child rearing experiences for adults. It has changed from the 1920s, when children had to work no matter where they lived, to now where you can't discipline your kid and society decides what is right. Punishing your child became customary over time, but today physical punishment is highly frowned upon. Looking into each of the decades since 1920, family life has been focused on the child and influenced by community expectations.
Many children suffer at the hands of adults - often their own parents. They are beaten, kicked, thrown into walls, and burned with cigarettes. They have their heads held under the water of toilet bowls, are scalded by hot water or they are forced to stand in freezing showers until they pass out. A child could be stuffed into running washing machines or sexually molested, suffer from neglect in the forms of starvation and lack of medical attention, and still go unnoticed by outsiders. In fact, it is estimated that about five children die every day in the U.S. from some form of child abuse. It is a sickening practice that has no set standard of rules to finish off the persisting problem. Different states have different methods and agencies to help prevent abuse in the home, some work quite well while others bomb - a dangerous gamble when it comes to the life or mental state of a child.
Violence is displayed everywhere in society through media like entertainment, in their schools and communities, and within their homes. It is difficult to imagine living in a world without some sort of violence due to it being so prevalent in society. Many children have been exposed to violence in their own homes or have become victims leaving detrimental short and long term effects. There are three forms of domestic violence in the homes. They are physical, sexual, emotional abuse. When thinking about statistics on child abuse, it’s very helpful to know that the idea of “child abuse” is very controversial. Recently, in particular homes and cultures, child abuse has come to be seen as a major social problem and a main cause of many people’s suffering and personal problems. Some believe that we are beginning to face the true prevalence and significance of child abuse. There is more to child abuse than just the physical scars; children are affected socially, mentally, and emotionally. According to the American National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, in 1997, neglect represented 54% of confirmed cases of child abuse, physical abuse 22%, sexual abuse 8%, emotional maltreatment 4%, and other forms of maltreatment 12%.
All parents are deficient from time to time and no parent can be emotionally available all the time to their children. It is perfectly normal for parents to yell at their children once in a while. Some parents may be controlling while some resort to physical discipline, but as long as the child receives plenty of love and understands why the discipline took place (Forward,1989). The question that lies ahead is: Does all of these options portray the parent as “cruel or unfit” to raise a child? Of course not. The saying “Spare the rod, spoil the child” stands true. Without discipline or order in the household, the child feels that there is no boundaries and can react in any form that he or she wants to without fearing the consequences. But, there is a distinct line between “discipline” and “abuse” which will be explained in the next chapter.
“Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” is an excerpt from Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua, a Yale Law professor. In this excerpt the author explains why Chinese children tend to be more successful in life and expresses her dislike towards Western parenting. The first idea Chua explains is a list of activities her daughters are allowed to do and not do in order to focus solely on academic progress. Second, the author demonstrates the contrast in mindset between Chinese mothers and Western mothers by explaining how Chinese mothers feel differently than Western mothers in regards to academic success and learning. The states can establish agencies and organizations to prevent child abuse. This act provides supports and helps, so it can help and support parents and abused children. However, it does not address fundamental problems. Thus, this law can help but cannot remove child abuse. The ways to remove the issue is to address fundamental factors such as poverty, less education, and skills and knowledge of parenting. Also, people who notice child abuse must report. We can easily notice if physical abuses such as violence happen outside. Thus, the physical, sexual, and emotional abuses have been reported more, so we can say that system works well. However, neglects are difficult to find from outside because the home is really closure. For instance, we cannot see that parents do not give any meals. Thus, even though how much people and agencies outside try to address and investigate, it does not direct way to address and prevent the issues. As mentioned above, poverty, isolation and other factors are causes of child abuse, we should address the main causes to truly prevent and remove child abuse. The most adequate countermeasure is to make society with parents with money, time and emotional to spare. The parents alone decided how to raise the child, what the cultural norms are, what pressures to put on the child, and how they want to be when they grow up. For example, in China toddles are selected by state run sports schools. The parents of these children can decide to send their one and only child off to these sport training boarding schools, where they undergo years of grueling training. But to these parent this is the best way to raise their child, because they have a slim chance of bringing honor to their family and to China and can have more opportunities for a successful career (Taboo). As the earliest and most durable source of socialization, a child’s parents are the first people with whom he identifies, and they remain the strongest influence in his development. This overwhelming importance of parenting has led developmental psychologists to take an intense interest in parent/child interactions(George and Rajan, 99). A study of the relation between child inhibition and parenting styles(Canada vs. China) has shown that, child inhibition was associated with mothers ' positive attitudes toward the child, including acceptance, lack of punitiveness, and encouragement of achievement among Chinese participants and with punishment and overprotectiveness among Canadian participants. In another study done by Sonia George and Amar Rajan, thirteen variables (factors) were identified as factors of child-rearing, which constituted how parents bring up their children. The factors include acceptance, punishment, protectiveness, responsibility, responsiveness, reward, understanding, non-critical, permissiveness, encouragement, rapport, emotional stability, and patience(George Rajan 101).
