Why are Post Secondary Students So Stressed? There are a number of reasons why post secondary students are stressed. Many of these reasons steam from our social interactions, relationships and our family. Some social interaction problems that you can encounter are roommate troubles, being away from home, dealing with dating, and parental supporting pressure. These stressors can develop into a bigger mental health issue such as depression and suicide. So why is it that these are such a problem?

One of the main issues with postsecondary students is that they are normally away from home. This causes a lot of pressure on them because they are leaving their comfort zone and are often exploring new territory to them. It can also means that often our mental illnesses go undetected because the people around us don’t know us that well. This is supported by Lunau (2012) in The Mental Health Crisis on Campus, “At college or university, they could be away from friends and family who know them best — people who might better recognize the warning signs of mental illness, like social withdrawal, increasing anxiety, a growing inability to cope, or other changes in behaviour.” This new experience and bing surrounded by new people forces into new social interactions. …show more content…

These interactions begin with our parents and when we begin school, they are developed by our peers. The current generation in post secondary lacks the skill of interpersonal interaction, this leads to a disconnect in communications. Our interactions with our peers can greatly impact our life, if we have a bad relationship with a peer, it can lead to pressure and unwanted stress. Another example is if you have a fight with your roommates it can lead distance, isolation and additional pressure which could lead to mental health
