With over 4,495 colleges in the United States alone, it can be complicated to narrow it down to just one. The U.S. is fortunate to have a multitude of colleges to choose from but it also produces it into a difficult choice. As a high school senior it seems we have to generate countless decisions and the biggest is college. When choosing a college everyone needs to consider the campus size, their degree fields, and the campus location. Campus’ range in sizes just like the towns we grow up in. Various people find it comforting to attend a larger college, so they have numerous social groups to pick from. With large schools people may come to the idea that they are just a tiny fish in a large pond. If someone enjoys seeing new people every day and barely seeing the same faces this is a favorable option. On the other hand small colleges have added one on one with the students. The professors will more than likely remember students for either great or terrible reasons. There will be a lower amount of people to socialize with and potentially befriend. Colleges occasionally specialize or excel in a few areas of study. As Oklahomans know if someone wants a veterinary or agricultural degree your preferred option is OSU. It does not secure one college superior than the other just simply forms it to be an exceeding choice to go to a higher rated college in the preferred field. I always wanted to attend to an important college. To me, that meant that the smartest people has to be there and one that had good reputation. After research and research I understood that my life have changed since I got to the United States. As an international student my opportunities were less, since I do not qualify for financial aid. My choices were less, but i realized that that does not stop me in going to college and prepare myself to be someone in life. I do not need to be at the most important college to prove myself how worth it I am. A two-year community college would let me prepare myself for much less cost and with great opportunities. Glendale Community College a small college would be the best place for me as a student. It is a place where I can get more attention for the teachers and I could pursue my career in medicine.
...Selecting a college to attend was a lengthy process. I applied to four different schools. I outweighed all the pros and cons of each college. The ultimate goal was to persevere and graduate with a degree. As a high school student, I think I found Ohio State appealing because of all the hype that surrounded it. Once I came to the conclusion that I wanted to go into the medical field, I realized that I needed to be in an atmosphere where I could maintain my focus. Nonetheless, the most consequential influencing factor was regarding finances. Case was extremely expensive but I received a substantial amount of financial help compared to Ohio State. In addition, I was fortunate to obtain a work study job that helped with living expenses. I knew that college would not be easy especially given Case’s reputation. In the end, I am confident I made the correct decision.
A look back at the institution of education over the past 20 years will reveal that once upon a time a bachelor’s degree was long since considered the marker of ultimate success, the highest level of achievement that one could make in their lives. State University would be one of the best institutions for this, just as the choice of high school I made four years ago, Good Counsel, was the next step for me then. During high school, I have grown and changed through not only the education I have gained, but also through the activities I participated in. The social aspect in college is a different atmosphere, in a good way, compared to high school. There are way much more activities, sports, and clubs for every student to participate in, than in high school. College students have both the privileges of being able to join sport teams, also as well as being able to use any athletic facilities the college has to offer. For example gyms, pools, and weight rooms. Colleges also like to host special social events that are not offered in high school. Examples of these events are orientation week and social nights. Colleges also offer more clubs than most high schools do. Colleges are usually guarantee to have a club for every student because the amount of students attending school. Athletic facilities, social events, clubs and special interest get together show the college life is much more social than the high school life.
While universities can range from having 20-1000 participants at a time, community colleges usually have no more than 50 participants in a class. As a result of such a large class size, it is harder for a professor to be able to develop the one-on-one time with a student. Due to most community colleges having a lower number of participants, it becomes easier for a student to reach out and ask questions and receive proper answers.
As a young woman growing up in an urbanized setting and attending public schools all of my life, when the time came to start planning and searching for colleges, I searched for schools that I felt fit my persona, that I would be comfortable attending for some of the most integral years of my life. My search included schools such as Temple University, and Pennsylvania State University, higher education institutions that allowed me to challenge myself, but at the same time would put me in a setting where I would be with others just like myself, fitting into the standard American university fashion.
