You are 17 years old, still in school, your girlfriend just broke up with you, and now you are convicted of first-degree murder for the death of your ex-girlfriend. What would you do? Also, what if there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that you did it, but then not enough to prove that you didn’t do? What would you do then? What would you tell people? Would you lie to them if you actually did it? This is a story of a teenager who was in a similar situation. His name is Adnan Syed. He was convicted of killing Hae Min Lee, his ex-girlfriend, in Maryland in 1999. 15 years later Sarah Koenig started a podcast, Serial. It didn’t seem like what a healthy relationship should look like. First off Adnan had always felt a little guilty for dating her because she wasn’t Muslim like him. It didn’t really look good in their religion when people did things like that. Plus, if his parents found out he would be in A LOT of trouble because he was not supposed to be dating anyone in the first place. But his parents did end up finding out in a pretty bad way, at least that’s what I think. They found out because while Adnan and Hae were at a school dance, one of the parents called his parents and asked about Hae.This then led to Adnan’s parents coming to the school and embarrassing him in front of everybody by yelling at him and dragging him out (Koenig, “The Breakup”). I’m not sure if Adnan was embarrassed, but I know I sure would’ve been. One other example, for this reason, is that Adnan was mad because he thought Hae moved on from him too quickly like she didn’t even give him another chance for anything. Which was true, at least from what I think. Right after Hae had broken up with Adnan, she had started to see this other guy from work, Don (Koenig, “The Breakup”). Adnan didn’t take this very well. According to Reddit, Hae even wrote in her Diary that she felt Adnan was not accepting the breakup well, and that at times she was feeling menaced by his behavior. Based on information provided by Sarah Koenig’s podcast, Serial, Hae Min Lee is killed by Adnan Syed, he yet says he didn’t murder her. Adnan is convicted of committing homicide, which he didn’t do, should not be in jail. This is for 3 main accounts; if something important happens a person remembers that day, Jay knew where Hae’s car was, and by how Sarah and her friend go by the day Jay described.
The psychological abuse that the four suspects were exposed to made them make a wrong confession. In addition, being in an environment where the interrogation room is tight and dark increased the suspect’s anxiety. Moreover, the Frontline documentary stated that the suspects were held in custody for long hours with Robert Ford who used threatening language in order to make them confess. Not only that the suspects made a false confession, but they also told Ford different stories on how they murdered the victim. The coercive interrogatories, led Joe Dick to accept the label Ford put on him and the others. Although Ford was supposed to act just, he acted upon his self interest. Thus, he denied all facts because of fear of embarrassment of being wrong. However, after serving many years in prison, the four suspects were released to face stigmatization and labeling from the society. What would you do if you were convicted of a crime you didn’t do? The story of Serial narrated by Sarah Koenig is about a man named Adnan Syed. Adna Syed was wrongly convicted of killing his ex girlfriend Hae Min Lee.Jay Wilds is a friend of Adnan who used to smoke weed with him sometimes after school,but he is also a suspect in the case. This story is interesting because Koenig is trying to find out who the murderer is of Hae Min Lee or if Adnan can be proven innocent. Believe that Adnan is innocent of the murdering of Hae Min Lee because one piece of evidence which are letters that a woman named Asia wrote to Adnan claiming that she saw Adna that day and at the time Hae was murdered at the library and that she even had a little chat with him. Another piece of evidence is that Best Buy tweeted a tweet saying that they never had a payphone which Jay claims that Adna called him from to come pick him up.
You’re woken up by police officers one morning. They say that they are taking you to be questioned for the murder of Hae Min Lee. That’s what happened to Adnan Syed, a young man sentenced to life in prison for murdering his ex-girlfriend. This would be any old hear-it-and-forget-it case, except that there were multiple problems with the case. The evidence that the State used was flawed. So, because there has not been any evidence presented that can prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, Adnan is not guilty.
Jay had some big inconsistencies in the stories of what happened that day. (The Alibi) Also just the fact that Adnan agreed to do the whole Serial season with Sarah. An innocent man would not be able to do that without spilling some kind of information. Adnan had more things making him more suspicious of being the murderer. The main thing that points fingers at Adnan is the Nisha call. (“Route Talk”) There was a call from Adnan's phone the day of the murder to Nisha while Adnan said he was at track practice. He told the court Jay had his phone during that time, but Jay and Nisha did not know each other, so why would they talk to each other for two minutes and 22 seconds (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”)?

Near the end of the episode, a girl is introduced who claims to clearly remember the day that Hae disappeared. Asia McClain believes that she saw and talked to Adnan in the library the day Hae went missing. She wrote two letters to Adnan and then an affidavit, but she was never contacted by a lawyer. When the case was petitioned, the judge ruled that Asia’s story is legally worthless as an alibi for Adnan because it contradicts his testimony.
