The Cinderella Man is a movie based on a true story that occurs during the period of the Great Depression in the 1930’s. The main character is James J. Braddock. Braddock was a famous Boxer in the 1920’s and a very wealthy man. Braddock then loses his money in the Stock Market Crash and Braddock and his family need to save every last dime in order to live. Braddock soon rises from the ashes and the second time fighting soon realizes why he is fighting again. When Braddock gets asked what he is fighting for in a press conference, his answer is clear to him but a mystery to everyone else. His answer was milk. As shown in the film Cinderella Man James and his wife need to add water to the milk they have in order to make it last longer. When Braddock begins fighting again he isn’t fighting for the fame or the respect of everyone else, Braddock is fighting to provide for his kids. Like so many others Braddock was fighting poverty and he did not have the money to buy milk weekly. So when Braddock responses with “milk” he reminds himself that he is not doing it for the lavish life like he did before, he's doing it so his family doesn’t need to live in a studio basement anymore and so that they can live a better life. …show more content…
In the film, Cinderella Man there are many flashbacks of Braddock's family throughout all Braddock's fights. From Braddock seeing his family gives him the strength in the fight to overcome his enemy, Max Baer. People wanted to escape from this harsh time so movies, dancing and sports became very popular. Radios broadcasted boxing matches and boxers became stars. The heavyweight champion James J. Braddock aka “Cinderella Man,” gained popularity. James Braddock gained fame by winning many fights and proving everyone wrong when they said he was too old and couldn’t win.
Not over analyzing, the film may seem as though the intended audience is for ex-boxers or for those who lived through the difficult times of the Great Depression, but, analyzing the film more thoroughly, it seems as though the intent is to aim for those who have suffered or are in the midst of suffering poverty and for those who lack determination or a support system such as family or friends. This film portrays a powerful message and, in a sense, has become very important. Cinderella Man is a film in which intends to inspire and motivate people to do better, become better, be great and arise from difficult times in order to turn things around for themselves. The film demonstrates various important messages such as the importance of family. James Braddock fights and does everything in his power to provide for his family. He takes up the dangerous boxing job, putting himself at risk, in order for his family to avoid suffering. James portrays what love for others is capable of making you do.

Cinderella is able to show how both versions are able to feed off the same plots while personifying the century and social economic situation in which they have lived.
The Great Depression is seen as one of the most sorrowful and desolate times in the history of the United States. This time was the longest period of recession ever seen by this nation so far. It lasted from 1929 to 1939, over ten years of complete confusion and despondency within the people. Many Americans were affected greatly by this tragic time and sacrificed much of their lives so that they and their families may have the chance to live. This act of desperation can be seen throughout the movie, The Cinderella Man, where a professional boxer, Jim Braddock, becomes crippled by the depression, both economically and spiritually. The observer can see this through the explicit cinematography of the movie and depiction of the Great Depression made by the director. However the director left out a key aspect of the happenings of the depression, the stock market crash. Perhaps, this catastrophic event was irrelevant to the plot and message of the movie, but it is important to the actual Great Depression of the United States. Furthermore, the nation of 2010 is well on its way to repeating history. There are frightening similarities between that dreadful time of the 1930’s and the present that should not be overlooked, or the United States might condemn itself back into that horrific state it has so long tried to avoid.

Adults should pay attention to this and see if Cinderella can help their children keep a positive attitude toward whatever situation they may be in - exaggerated as it may be. Cinderella doesn't only help show one how to overcome adversity it points out good morals, and sends the message that good always prevails. Both of these messages are crucial in a society that is slowly crumbling. All we can do is watch and hope the messages learned from Cinderella make a difference in the lives of Children all around the world.
A young girl is forced to live with her step-mother and step-sisters after her father and mother die. She becomes the maid of the family, tending to their every need. Eventually there is a ball; she acquires a fairy Godmother, goes to the ball, falls in love with the prince, blah blah blah. All you really need to know is that she has a happy ending. A happy ending. No matter how much suffering she went through in her early years, at the end, it all came together and she had no more worries. And this is the problem. Cinderella is not realistic. It never was and never will be. Watching this movie when I was young made me believe there was a prince waiting for me somewhere. I grew up thinking that life was simple and uncomplicated, that I did not need to worry about the future because there was a man that would provide everything I wanted and needed. But as I got older, I realized this was not the case. I saw many of my friend’s parents divorce, people die, and the world fight with each other. My fantasy died off, and I realized I had to work hard for myself, and not others. The poem Cinderella by Anne Sexton made fun of the ending of Cinderella. She states, “Cinderella and the prince / lived … happily ever after … / their darling smiles pasted on for eternity. / Regular Bobbsey Twins. / That story.” (Sexton 11). Fairytales, the short stories that most children heard as they went to bed, are actually folktales from previous decades. The fairytales today are primarily adaptations of older versions recreated by Disney— the pioneers of this generation. With that said, the modern versions consistently display good triumphing over evil, a prince charming that constantly came to the rescue, and a happily ever after ending. However, the original folktale version didn’t always come with fortunate events, but often were more violent and gruesome. With the fairytale Cinderella, Disney maintains a similar theme as its Grimm version; however, the conflicts, events, and characters that support this idea are rather different.
