This is due to the fact that after his transformation he no longer possesses the feeling of happiness in his life. This is shown when the narrator says, “Farewell to kindness, humanity and gratitude. Farewell to all sentiments that gladden the heart” (Dumas 131). This shows how Dantes leaves behind all of the sentiments which cause people joy and happiness in life. This is significant because this point in the novel is when Dantes turns into a cruel and inhumane being. Therefore, the fact that he is inhumane during a time of unhappiness supports the thesis by showing how happiness gives one their humanity. During this time, Dantes also believes himself to be an almighty being whose power is equal to God. This is shown when the narrator says, “And do you regard yourself as one of those extraordinary beings? asked Villefort; Yes, I’m one of them, said Monte Cristo” (Dumas 211). This shows how Dantes believes himself to possess powers which are equal to those of God. This is significant because during this time Dantes is a very malevolent and barbaric being. Therefore, the fact that he is such a cruel being when he believes himself equal to God reinforces the thesis by showing how one’s belief that God is the only almighty being causes one to have humanity. In The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas Edmond Dantes shows that one’s humanity heavily relies on one’s happiness
