The short story “The Necklace” tells the tale of a woman and her husband who are invited to a dance, but they lose the necklace that was loaned to the woman by her friend. It is a story radiating with irony and moral concepts, many along the lines of simple proverbs such as honesty is the best policy” or “be content with what you have”. Aside from this, however, there are many aspects about the characters themselves that lead the readers to question their actions and try to see their point of view of the events taking place throughout the story. Taking the husband for instance with the way he treats his wife, he never once throughout the story seems to take the time to spend time with her to enjoy her company and just appreciate her. All his acts of “love” are related to money, possessions, or power. He makes it seem as if she means a lot to him but you never see him acting on it. It is for these and many other reasons why I do in fact believe the husband to be at least somewhat of a misogynist. …show more content…

He gives her the invitation to the dance asking her to come with him and in the beginning he seems very sweet, but when it comes down to the actual night of it he doesn't even dance with her. He leaves her alone to dance with other men. As even the story quotes, “All the men stared at her, inquired her name, and asked to be introduced to her. All the Under-Secretaries of State were eager to waltz with her. The Minister noticed her.” While his wife is out there having the time of her life with other guys her husband is in a completely different room and sleeping.“Since midnight her husband had been dozing in a deserted little room, in company with three other men whose wives were having a good time.” It was as if she meant nothing to him and was merely there for her looks as an attempt by her husband to gain favor and to move up in
