In the story, Brody is said to be a family man and a chief of police that is bothered by many people. Martin Brody has an open relationship with his wife Ellen. Together, they both encourage one another and attempt to be a shield of protection for their two sons without scaring them. After Chrissie Watkins had been killed from the shark, Brody makes an effort to alert the public about what happened. Martin Brody is then shut down by the mayor, Larry Vaughn, about notifying the public. In the second half of the story, Brody continues to recommend people to take caution. He then advises Quint, the fisherman that he needs a bigger boat. After the boys crash on the island, their immediate reaction to the island is its beauty. The weather on the island was hot and humid, without a breeze. The look of the “dazzling beach and the water” (Golding) is unlike anything they have ever seen. The island was superior in their eyes as “The boys find themselves in a tropical paradise: bananas, coconuts, and other fruits are profusely available.” (Slayton) There was no fear and an instant commodore due to the circumstance. However, after becoming comfortable, a natural fear of the unknown begins to settle “as if it wasn’t a good island” (Golding) and they find themselves faced with an entity named, The Beast. This dark fear comes back to haunt them later.

There are four men stranded on a boat who are introduced in the beginning of the story. The cook, the oiler, the correspondent, and the captain are all on a boat that "a man ought to have a bath tub larger than" (360). As the men fight the crest of each wave they encounter, it is obvious that this is a desperate situation. Showing their powerlessness the narrator describes a group of birds as sitting ."..comfortably in groups, and they were envied by some in the dinghy, for the wrath of the sea was no more to them than it was to a covey of prairie chickens a thousand miles inland" (363). Even though the men are in grave danger, the sun rises and sets and a shark even swims by but seems to have no need for the men in the boat.
