Lady Bird is a 2017 American comedy-drama film directed and written by Greta Gerwig. It stars Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Merchalf, Lucas Hedges, Lois Smith, Beanie Feldstein, Timothee Chalamet, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. This movie is about a high-school senior coming of age and her relationships with others, especially her mother. The main character Lady Bird is desperate to go to an ivy league college and get away from her hometown. Her mother calls her ungrateful and is constantly pointing out she takes what she has for granted. This movie is set in the year 2002, in Sacramento, California. While driving they listen to an emotional tape and after it ends her mother wants to take a few moments of silence and let it sink in. Lady Bird, however, does not want to this and would rather move on to the next thing. This causes them to fight and Lady Bird jumps out of the moving car. The movie descends into Lady Bird at her Catholic high school with a pink cast on her broken arm. During this scene, we meet her best friend Julie and Sister Sarah Joan encourages her to join the drama club. When she does she meets Danny. They eventually develop a relationship and she spends Thanksgiving at his grandmother's place, to her mother’s disappointment. After they begin dating she befriends one of the popular girls at the school, Jenna, and slowly begins to desert Julie. After everything that has happened so far, she drops out drama club. She eventually loses her virginity to Kyle and believes he is a virgin a well, but after it happens he denies having said it. This makes her feel incomplete and breaks up with him. After she befriends Jenna, she lies to her by telling her place is actually Danny’s grandmother’s place. When Jenna makes a surprise visit she learns Lady Bird has lied to her and makes it clear they are no longer friends. Lady Bird had still planned on attending prom with Kyle after their breakup, but on the night it happens he and his friend group wanted to skip it but Lady Bird does not and she gets out of the car. While she might think that her plans are working, they only lead her down a path of destruction. She lands in a boarding house, when child services find her, she goes to jail, becomes pregnant by a man who she believed was rich. Also she becomes sentenced to 15 years in prison, over a street fight with a former friend she double crossed. In the end, she is still serving time and was freed by the warden to go to her mother’s funeral. To only discover that her two sisters were adopted by the man she once loved, her sister is with the man who impregnated her, and the younger sister has become just like her. Donna’s father is angry when he finds out and automatically assumes it means she’s going to have sex with many men. This example is representative of the double standard held between men and women. It wouldn’t be an issue if one of the boys had multiple partners or used birth control, but as soon as one of the females does, it is frowned upon. When Jackie hears that Donna is on the pill, she exclaims “you’re going to be so popular,” which implies women can only be well-liked if they please men. Then, Eric’s parents give him “the talk” and while Kitty mentions that foreplay is important, Red disagrees. This implies a woman’s pleasure is not important, as long as men are taken care of. While Laurie is home, Eric finds out that she is failing classes, perpetuating the “dumb blonde”
I think the canary symbolized Mrs. Wright. Mrs. Hale describes her; "She -- come to think of it, she was kind of like a bird herself - real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and - fluttery. How - she - did - change"; and like a bird, Mrs. Wright even sang in a choir. But after she got married, every thing stopped. She didn't sing anymore or attend social functions. Like a bird, her house became her cage. The only happiness that she appears to have is with this bird. The bird probably sang when she could not. He was probably a companion to her, she had no children. And like her, he was also caged. Because we do not know, we can only guess that her husband killed her bird. If he killed the bird then he would have killed the only thing that was important to her. He killed her once when he married her and caged her in that house, and he killed her again when he destroyed her bird. "No,. Wright wouldn't like the bird - a thing that sang. She used to sing. He killed that, too." When Mrs. Wright was used to its singing and her world became quiet again, it was too much for her take.
Wright. The bird had been Mrs. Wright’s last resort of happiness; it represents who she used to be. This bird was very precious to Mrs. Wright, that becomes obvious when the author says this,“ Mrs. Peters drew nearer—then turned away. “There’s something wrapped up in this piece of silk,” Silk was not an easy thing to come by. Considering that the women come to believe Mr. Wright strangled Minnie’s bird, they make the inference that he did not treat her properly and she would not have been able to get expensive things like silk often. If Minnie wrapped her bird in silk, then it obviously means a lot to her. The women finally understand what happened to Minnie’s bird when they take a closer look at it, “But, Mrs. Peters!” cried Mrs. Hale. “Look at it! Its neck—look at its neck! It’s all—other side to. ”She held the box away from her. The sheriff’s wife again bent closer. “Somebody wrung its neck,” said she, in a voice that was slow and deep.” The women know that Minnie liked this bird a lot and there was no way she would have killed the bird. They come to realize that it was not her that killed the bird, it was Mr. Wright, and the bird was not the only thing that he would have been rough with. “When I was a girl,” said Mrs. Peters, under her breath “my kitten—there was a boy took a hatchet, and before my eyes—before I could get there—” She covered her face an instant. “If they had not held me back
Another reason that Mrs. Wright could’ve been pushed to murder her husband was because of some evidence the women found in a shoe box and assumed to be the husbands doing was the broken neck of her canary. The canary was used by Glaspell to represent Mrs. Wright’s spirit and her marriage. The reasoning for this distinction was because earlier in the story the two women described Mrs. Wright as a free spirited person with a sweet voice like a canary. She needed to stand up for herself against the abuse and oppression as a housewife a decision made from the death of her beautiful bird. Just like the bird had a cage she too was caged in her own home. She felt in prisoned to her marriage so with free of death to her bird brought courage to give herself freedom or perhaps it’s just coincidence that her husband was discovered with a broken neck just like her canary.
The movie The Bird Cage is about a gay couple that owns a gay/drag queen night club in South Beach Florida. The couple is Robin Williams who plays Armand Goldman, whose is the partner, and Nathan Lane plays his partner Albert, who is also known as Starina throughout the movie. From the start you can tell that their night club is a major attraction and big hit for the gay community that resides in South Beach Florida. Armand’s partner Albert is a cross dresser that does a standup routine as well as being part owner with his partner Armand.
Peters finds the bird cage, it is empty. This bird cage never actually had a bird in it. In paragraph 218, Mrs. Hale finds the canary has croaked: “‘There’s something wrapped up in this piece of silk,’ faltered Mrs. Hale. ‘This isn’t her scissors,’ said Mrs. Peters, in a shrinking voice. Her hand not steady, Mrs. Hale raised the piece of silk. ‘Oh, Mrs. Peters!’ she cried. ‘It’s—’ Mrs. Peters bent closer. ‘It’s the bird,’ she whispered. ‘But, Mrs. Peters!’ cried Mrs. Hale. ´Look at it! Its neck—look at its neck! It’s all—other side to.’”(Glaspell). Sadly, the bird was strangled, and I think that Mr. Wright did it. Mrs. Wright clearly loved her feathered friend. After it was killed, she wrapped it in a square of silk. Back then, silk was very expensive even for a little piece like that. Mrs. Hale explains how Millie loved to sing, and this bird must remind her of when she was happy. Mr. John Wright was not very happy with this bird. If he could stop his wife from singing and being happy, he could surely stop a little bird. So Wright goes into the room and snaps its neck, destroying his wife’s most prized
But in this story, it embodies a theme of entrapment which was also experienced by Vanessa’s father, as mentioned above. The bird that was trapped in her window represents the trapped environment that only lead to an aimless movement. Our bodies do numerous things that we do not understand. We wonder why our body is in a certain condition, perhaps we express negativity, depression without even know it is a good idea.
The birdcage represents how Mrs. Wright was trapped in her marriage, and could not escape it. The birdcage door is broken which represents her broken marriage to Mr. Wright. It also represents Mrs. Wright escaping her marriage from Mr. Wright. When the door is open it allows Mrs. Wright to became a free woman. At one point in time the cage door use to have a lock that locked the bird inside the cage. This represents how Mr. Wright kept Mrs. Wright locked up from society. Mr. Wright knew that by keeping Mrs. Wright locked up, she would never be able to tell anyone how he really acted. Mr. Wright was very cruel to his wife.

...; The birds are also a manifestation of Melanie's fear of emotional relationship and her struggle with Mitch and with Lydia over Mitch. The first gull attacks Melanie when she realizes that she was successful in manipulating Mitch into following her. The most violent attack occurs after a conversation between Mitch and Melanie about the anger Melanie feels about being abandoned by her mother. Each succeeding attack wears away at Melanie until she has lost it completely by the end of the film. As the film progresses, there are no longer any illusions about Melanie being in control. In conclusion, Melanie is completely dependent upon anyone who will help her. We watch Melanie, helpless in the car with Lydia who smiles beneficently down on Melanie; in return Melanie stares yearningly into Lydia's eyes, having finally found the mother she has been searching for.

As the scene begins, Vanessa and her three children come to visit Virginia. While playing in the garden, the children find a dying bird on the ground. They decide to construct a bed of roses around the grass for the bird. Watching the children make the bed for the bird, Virginia notices the bird: “It seems to have wanted to make the smallest possible package of itself.” (Cunnigham, pg. 120). This shows that the bird fascinates Virginia; she wonders how the bird’s body becomes smaller and less important after it dies. Cunnigham also writes that “She would like to lie down on it herself” (Cunnigham, pg. 119). This shows that at this point, Virginia longs for death; she wants the same peace that the bird has been able to obtain through death; however, this longing changes once Vanessa and her children return to Charleston.
