In the novel “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison, we are supplied an expanded interpretation of how “whiteness” is the standard of beauty, which twists the lives of African American women and children. The theme of race and that white skin is considered superior is portrayed through stories told by the characters, especially Pecola and her family. There’s a wide spread of sexual violence within the novel suggesting that racism, poverty and white supremacy aren’t the only things that distort African American women’s perception of themselves. Through the struggles they have encountered, Morrison shows us the catastrophic effect of this idea of white beauty on black individuals and on society. She stresses the fact that when you’re put outdoors, there is no place to go. She sheds light on why pecola is being taken care of despite the fact she's a complete stranger to them. The time period the Breedlove’s lived in was during and after the great depression, a time of poverty but high hopes. After the great depression many social programs were created for economical relief. Sadly, there was still constant discrimination against African Americans causing little or no relief at all across their race. If the Politicians that voted for these social programs didn’t feel superior about their race then America would have seen a up roar in wealth among all races. Thus helping Pecola's family have a real home with their individual rooms,a kitchen, a family room nicely furnitured. During that era woman had no say, they had no rights not until the late 1960s.
