White Mountain National Forest
Legend has it that the White Mountains received their name from early sailing visitors to New England who saw the distant snow capped peaks in the distance as the sailed south along the coast.
The White Mountain National Forest was established to protect these mountains in 1911. This followed the passage of the Weeks Act, due in large part to public outcry, which allowed the federal government to purchase private land East of the Mississippi River to create parks for public use. Prior to the establishment of the White Mountain Forest the area had been utterly ravaged by unrestricted and uncontrolled logging, which spawned massive fires that ripped across the barren landscape.
From the original purchase of 7,000 acres in Benton, New Hampshire, the Forest has grown over the years, and now encompasses 800,000 acres. Of this, 112,000 acres (@ 15%) have been designated as wilderness. The remaining area is conserved for activities and uses including recreation, wildlife habitat, water, wilderness and timber.

Approximately 29 million board-feet of timber are taken annually from the forest (1 million board-feet builds about 100 two-thousand square foot homes). Harvesting is selected and carried out carefully to improve recreational facilities, create trails and vistas, improve wildlife habitat and provide wood products. These are very difficult questions for me personally to answer because I live in the Pacific Northwest, and I have seen the beauty of the old growth forests first-hand.

Within decades following the passage of the act the vast majority of what had been tribal land in the West was in white hands. Imagine a scenic, wild landscape with animals that roam freely, cascading waterfalls, and mountains that seem to scrape the pale blue sky. This is what one thinks when first hearing the name Yosemite National Park. Unfortunately, the reality is completely opposite. Yosemite is now under a federally regulated Class 1 area under the Clean Air Act, which is equivalent to the pollution of Los Angeles (“National Parks Service”). It is a sad comparison to the past John Muir, who first documented Yosemite Valley, to today’s reality. The condition of Yosemite National Park should be introduced to the American public in order to protect its historic beauty and significance, eliminate current pollution, and prevent future repercussions.

1909 saw the next act created: The Enlarged Homestead Act. This act granted 320 acres if a quarter of it was cultivated. It encouraged settlement in the nine westernmost states and in the western portion of the Great Plains. This act also became the leading factor in the cause of the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s, as many newer settlers did not know how to properly use the land and plowed/overgrazed it so much no new grass could grow causing dust storms to sweep the nation. That is why I think the Enlarged Homestead Act had the greatest and most negative impact on the rangelands.
The area of Black Forest was settled in pre-colonial times by numerous native Indian tribes like the Utes and the Comanche’s. These groups were eventually driven out by various other groups like the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes who prior to settlement drove out the native Kiowa tribes, the Arapahoe and Cheyenne consequently, were the last known native inhabitants of the area. These native tribes made great use of the land which was abundant with natural and valuable crops and trees. With vegetation such as the Ponderosa Pines which provided fuel and materials for building, and the corn and wheat crops used for multifaceted tools and cooking items, the various indigenous groups were well suited to their surrounding location. White settlers began to inhabit the area in earnest around the mid 1800’s and eventually became the dominant group of the range by the 1860’s. This eventually led to the perpetual settlement and commercialization of the area and it later became known for its lumber, cattle and crop farming, ranching, and potatoes. The Battle to protect Yellowstone, a 3,500-sq.-mile recreational area was a struggle and could be lost at any given time. During this period, Yellowstone was already made a national park, but problems involving no commercial exploitation, minor pollution, railroads, and mining nearby were hurting the park. At the time, America was under the leadership of President Glover Cleveland. The president partnered with Roosevelt and ideas from the Boone and Crockett Club, resulting in Cleveland signing a bill that protected the environment involving Yellowstone. This was the primary start that leads Teddy Roosevelt to contribute to the organization of several future National Parks. He signed legislation and accomplished setting up a total of five new national parks. With that grand achievement and leadership, Congress was influenced to pass an act in the year of 1902 known as the Reclamation Act (also known as the Lowlands Reclamation Act). This provided protection for the twenty arid states, located in the West part of America. Codependency is diversely characterized. Some symptoms include; Low self-esteem, a person compares himself to others and feels that he is not good enough; People pleasing, one does everything to please the people he cares about without a choice; Poor boundaries, demonstrated by poor or no limits at all to protect one’s interests, and instead one feels responsible for other people’s wellbeing; Reactivity, where a person reacts to other people’s thoughts, opinions, and feelings by believing them or becoming defensive due to poor boundaries; Caretaking, one gives up his needs, ignores his problems and tries to solve other people’s problems. Such people feel bad when their help is rejected; Control, one takes measures not to expose his feelings to those he cares about....
