People say that fiction is make believe nonsense without knowing what’s behind said nonsense. While the definition of fiction is a work of the imagination, they take much influence from the real world and the issues with society. In the book, “Where Things Come Back” by John Corey Whaley, a seventeen year old boy named Cullen Witter deals with the sudden disappearance of his fifteen year old brother. While he tells the story of how he copes with the loss, he also tells the story of a missionary in Africa named Benton Sage, who creates a chain reaction of events that is the cause of the disappearance of Cullen’s brother. In his article, Michael E. Bratsis states, “Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for high school students after accidents and homicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” Because so many high school students have commited suicide, it is crucial that more is done to help students with these thoughts and educate students about suicide prevention. Because there are many novels such as Where Things Come Back that feature such themes, reading these books can help students learn about the topic of suicide. “Schools have been sued for negligence for failing to notify parents if a student appears suicidal, get help for a student at risk of suicide, and adequately supervise an at-risk student.” Because many schools fail to recognize or educate students on suicidal behavior, it has contributed to the loss of several students.
