I recently got done watching the movie “Where the Red Fern Grows” and reading the book. While watching the movie I discovered some differences and similarities. I think in the movie there were a lot of differences then the book. If the movie was written just like the book, it would be a very long movie because of every detail that would have to be put in the movie from the book. One difference between the book and the movie was that, they say Billy’s sisters names in the movie, and in the book he has three sisters and in the movie he has two. The important similarities, such as how Billy saved up for and bought the dogs, the way he chopped down a giant sycamore to fulfill a promise to his dogs, and the red fern that had grown on the dogs’ graves, are all there, showing that the movie producers read the novel before they started producing it. However, the lack of an Old Billy, an actual win, and Ann’s almost death shows that the analysis of the book wasn’t quite complete when they started filming. As a result, most of the book was better than the movie, as the attachment to the characters was greater due to the scenes that were in the book, but not in the movie. The only part of the movie that was redeeming was the lack of the “first chapter,” when Old Billy gave away the win in the novel. Since that part of the plot was not in the film, it kept the victor of the competition a mystery, and therefore keeps the suspense there during the hunt. During the Talladega 500, Cal Naughton Jr., Ricky Bobby's former best friend, pulled ahead of Ricky, allowing him to slingshot around his car and pass Jean Girard. Though Cal and Girard were teammates at Dennit Racing, Cal disregarded this and jeopardized his team's success to aid Ricky in the movie Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. This moment was crucial to Ricky, he having fallen from grace, going from NASCAR's top driver to being let go by Dennit Racing. The love Cal exhibited was a selfless form of love that was centered entirely around Ricky's happiness, not his own. Because of this selflessness, Cal compromised his own agenda, winning for Dennit, and disregarded personal consequence in hopes that Ricky would win the race. If you truly love someone as Cal loved Ricky, you must sometimes compromise your own interests for their benefit.

Many of the characters do not even exist in the book or movie. In the book, Hannah has a little brother named Aaron when Hannah is in the present. When Hannah gets transported to the past, she sees a man walking through a field and she turns around and sees an older woman in the house. Those people are Shmuel and Gertrude. They are her aunt and uncle and they care for Hannah since her parents died. In the movie, Hannah does not have a little brother, she is an only child. When she is in the past, Gertrude is not a character and Shmuel is not her uncle. Instead, Hannah meets Rivka in the house and Ricka is Hannah’s cousin. Hannah lives with Rivka and Rivka’s mother. Hannah is also called “Chaya” in the book when she is in 1942. Hannah is just called her regular name in the movie - not her Jewish name. In the book, Shmuel gets married to a stunning woman named Fayge. However, in the movie, Shmuel gets married to Leah, who does not pay any attention to Hannah, unlike Fayge loved Hannah in the book. Hannah meets four friends at the wedding. Their names are: Rachel, Esther, Shifre, and Yente. Then, at the camp, Hannah meets Rivka, who has lived in that camp for one year and she lost all her family members except her brother, who is Grandpa Will in the book. In the juxtaposition of the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley and its movie adaptation, one can find distinct differences between the two art forms.
