The Different Experiences of Puerto Ricans' Migration to the United States. Some people are inclined to view the Puerto Rican experience as a historical repetition of earlier migrations to the United States. However, the migration experience of Puerto Ricans to the United States is more complex, as well as one of a kind. The novel, “Dreaming in Cuban” by Christina Garcia, is about a Cuban family. This novel is structured around the Cuban Revolution, everything from politics, family life, and spirituality. The women in the family all have strained relationships. They all have very different personalities and different reactions to the revolution. Being Puerto Rican means a lot to me. It means having an enriched heritage. We have a diverse ethnic background and this makes us unique. I am very proud of the struggle, we as Puerto Ricans have had to overcome. When I sit at my grandmother’s dining room table, eating white rice with beans and chuletas with a Malta to drink, I reflect on how glad I am to be a Puerto Rican because we eat so well. Esperanza, a strong- willed girl who dreams big despite her surroundings and restrictions, is the main character in The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Esperanza represents the females of her poor and impoverished neighborhood who wish to change and better themselves. She desires both sexuality and autonomy of marriage, hoping to break the typical life cycle of woman in her family and neighborhood. Throughout the novel, she goes through many different changes in search of identity and maturity, seeking self-reliance and interdependence, through insecure ideas such as owning her own house, instead of seeking comfort and in one’s self. Esperanza matures as she begins to see the difference. She evolves from an insecure girl to a mature young lady through her difficult life experiences and the people she comes across. It is through personal encounters and experiences that Esperanza begins to become sexually aware and acceptance her place and self-definition in her community.

Are you Puerto Rican or American? Hesitantly, I don't know what to say when people ask me this question because I feel that I have to choose between the two ethnicities. Since I was born in the U.S., I am considered American. But, if I say I am American, I am asked about my origins. Thus, controversy evolves around inhabitants of Puerto Rico because they are considered Americans since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States.
With the building pressure of Puerto Ricans vote for statehood last year resulted in majority voting to become a state (Alessandra Potenza, P21) , brings up the question should Puerto Rico become an US state? Puerto Rico's lack of jobs, citizens, government , and conflicts with United states of America are reasons to why becoming a state would only harm the US.
