“The World is Full of Monsters” is a short story about a man who is afraid of monsters. One particular day, he feels hungry while staring at the computer screen. He places his mask down besides his computer screen and goes down to the pantry where the food is stored. While trying to open the door, it falls off and shatters. He takes an apple in one hand, shards in another, and walks up to the attic. When he disposes of the shards, he takes a bite out of the apple. The taste of the apple shocks him and he drops it, making it rolls towards the mirror he is always afraid to look into. He takes a glance into the mirror and finds out that he is part of the monsters he always fears. He throws the wooden shard into the mirror and it shatter, cutting him. He looks down and sees the same skin he finds on monsters. This drives him crazy and leads him to commit suicide by taking a wooden shard and driving it straight through his heart. He slowly walks into his room where he sees his mask he left next to the computer screen before he passes out and dies. …show more content…

The monsters which the character is afraid of are humans. The archetype I used was that of the “loner”, someone who struggles to connect with society. I feel as if this best exemplifies my character as he is afraid of society and its members in general. Literary devices which I used are simile, imagery, personification, metaphor, and a couple more. A huge example of simile was used in describing the comfort of home in the beginning. Imagery was used all over my paper, I tried to describe each and every item in my story. For example, I described the taste of the apple, the blood red door, etc. Personification was used to describe the dreadful stare the mask gave me. Metaphor was used to describe himself as a creature and nothing more when he first talks about the
