Money plays an important role in the theme of The Great Gatsby. A theme that if a person has money they should use it with responsibility. Jay Gatsby found the love of Daisy Baker before he had to leave to go to war. When he came back he learned Daisy had is married with someone else and she lives in Long Island, New York. In Long Island there is a west egg and an east egg where the east egg was the more wealthy of the two and Daisy Baker lived in the east. Gatsby decided to build his house across from Daisy's house so she would see his home and what he has accomplished. "And distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have the end of a dock."(21). Gatsby stood at the end of his dock to watch for Daisy.
In the novel The Great Gatsby a symbol that is repeatedly used is Gatsby’s mansion, Gatsby uses his home to gain Daisy’s love. Gatsby 's mansion is in West Egg with the “new money” is right across the river from East Egg where the “old money” is. His mansion is big and extravagant as if to rival with the “old money”, or prove he deserves to be there. Fitzgerald uses Gatsby’s mansion to show the grandness of the 1920’s boom and as a physical symbol of Gatsby’s love for Daisy; in the end, the mansion represents the emptiness in Gatsby’s life due to materialism and superficiality.
Our story, The Great Gatsby, starts out when Nick, a stock trader, moves to West Egg. West Egg is a part of Long Island where the "new" rich people live. "New" rich is a term used to describe people who have recently acquired their wealth, and have no connections in East Egg, where the people who have established their wealth live. Gatsby befriends Nick for a good reason, to meet his long lost love, Daisy, Nick’s cousin and resident of East Egg. Unfortunately for Gatsby, Daisy is married to Tom, a boisterous man who has taken in a mistress and everyone in the novel knows about it.
Money Equals Happiness in The Great Gatsby Throughout history many societies have had upper, middle, and lower classes. The classes formed separate communities of diverse living and never crossed social barriers. In the book, The Great Gatsby, instead of streets and communities separating each class, there was a sound. On West Egg, the rich received their money not from inheritance but from what they accomplished by themselves.
When Gatsby returned from war, he set back to his goal. When he had reached the first part of the American Dream, the money, he bought a house in the West Egg close to the other part of his dream. Daisy. He even started idolizing the green light on the end of the Buchanan dock, which is a symbol of that for which he strives. Gatsby wants to fulfill the American Dream and be complete, but he can't do it without Daisy, his love.
The 1920s is the era where a lot of people are gaining wealth through bonds, credits, and bootlegging. “New Money”, or people who suddenly became rich, are rising, and the “Old Money”, people who inherited their wealth from their family, just becomes wealthier. In the novel, although “New Money” people are already considered wealthy, “Old money” still considers them as an outcast of the wealthy society for they think “New Money” people does not have the elegance and grace of the old aristocracy. In the novel, Fitzgerald, portrays wealth as an identity, which contributes to their level of success and power to control and destroy the society.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a book that takes place all the way back in the 1920s where we look through the eyes of a young man by the name of Nick Carraway. Nick moved from Minnesota into New York Long island and quickly befriends the mysterious Jay Gatsby which is whom the story is oriented around. We see through Nick 's eyes Jay Gatsby fight for the woman he loves (a married woman by the name of Daisy) and in the end, die with a broken heart. The Great Gatsby is all about the 1920s the American dream and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s opinion on them, within the book Scott Fitzgerald makes it obvious he doesn 't approve of the way people were choosing to act and the way the new mentality changed the American dream in the 1920s. Gatsby’s Motif F. Scott Fitzgerald presents many themes in the novel “The Great Gatsby”, such as wealth, mortality, society and class. But the most focused theme, and part of the main plot of this book, is love. The motif of this theme, cheating, is shown in the story throughout the entire book with the main characters, their friends, even people we have no description of. Everyone is cheating on their husband and wife, except for the main narrator, Nick. How the characters perform the act of cheating is by hanging out with their real lover and the one they’re having an affair with at the same time and keeping it low key.

The major settings are East Egg, West Egg, Valley of Ashes, and New York City. East Egg, which represents old money, includes Daisy’s house where Daisy lives with her husband Tom. At the end of the bay on the East Egg side, there is a green light that represents Gatsby’s future dreams which involves Daisy, but also symbolizes Daisy’s constant attachment to money and greed. Old money consists of sophisicated individuals who have had their money for a long period of time and are comfortable with the amount that they have secured. West Egg, which represents new money, includes Gatsby’s mansion and Nick’s house. Since Gatsby’s money is “new,” he doesn’t have the correct social reputation that would make him be accepted in East Egg. Since Gatsby
Gatsby and Diver are both presented as wealthy men leading privileged lives. ‘The Great Gatsby’ was written before the Depression, and the optimism and faith in the power of money within the novel demonstrates this belief that people had. Notably, it is the characters’ faith in riches, and not Fitzgerald’s own. Gatsby is a self-made millionaire, making his money through bootlegging. He has acquired vast amounts of money, and believes that this money will help persuade Daisy to love him and leave Tom. This is illustrated in Chapter five when Daisy is shown around Gatsby’s mansion at his request. He shows her every detail, through from the gardens to his shirts and ‘he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes’. Gatsby sees his money and possessions as wonderful things, but they are also more than that, they are a means to an end, the end being Daisy. He bough the house because of where it was in relation to Daisy (across the bay), and he held the most amazing parties in the hope that Daisy, or someone that knew Daisy would come. Gatsby, in effect, devoted his whole life to the search for Daisy, and his money is a tool to help him find his love.
In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald details the American society during the Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald uses symbolism of T.J. Eckleburg 's eyes to convey the loss of spiritual values in America in order to show how society lost their religion and ethics during the Roaring Twenties. In addition, Fitzgerald entails the corruption of society, the eyes of an omnipotent God, and implies the carelessness and mistreatment of people towards each other through T.J. Eckleburg’s eyes.
Despite the amount of property and money that Jay Gatsby acquired, he was not old money, thus, not worth Daisy risking her place in society.. Gatsby thought that having wealth would guarantee Daisy to be his again. His naivety about Daisy seemed childish, but in Gatsby wealth is hugely important to the characters. Despite the completely different settings of Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Great Gatsby, wealth affects the characters in many similar ways, including their happiness and success in their relationships. The relationships that the characters have are, despite not being based off of wealth, affected greatly by the lack or surplus of wealth.
Gatsby’s dream is to win the heart of Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby is a handsome, youthful man, who lives in West Egg. West Egg represents “new money”, those who recently became rich but, lack an established social position. His mansion sits on “more than forty acres of lawn and garden”; he drives a yellow car of enormous length. This location was intentionally chosen in order to be closer to Daisy who lives in East Egg. He reinvents himself as a millionaire, only to win her heart. Gatsby is well known for his elaborate parties; where there is an abundance of food, live Jazz musicians and unlimited liquor. Gatsby never attends his parties. He is merely and absorber; watching instead of taking part. They are thrown with one purpose, to attract Daisy.
