Roles of Women in the Victorian Era Role of Victorian women was expected to be limited to childbearing and housewife. There were some changes that occurred in the lives of women during Victorian times. The Victorian age is caused by the reform act in 1832 and subsequent acts, but this time also marked by extreme diversities with the industrial reforms, cultural progress, when that happened they had a big advancement with poverty and wars as well. The Victorian era was a period of time in England spanning from 1837 to 1901, named after Queen Victoria who reigned in this time period. Women were a suppressed gender in the Victorian era. Unmarried women that were 21 years old or older had the right to own their own property and earn their own money; however as soon as they got married they lost all of their rights. Their husband was now entitled to all wealth and property. Most people accepted the suppression however certain people started fighting for women’s rights. One of the protestors was Barbara Bodichon who wrote the pamphlet “Laws Concerning Women”, which is about the laws that women were obligated to follow.

Although the changes are not noticeably dramatic to most people today, these changes had a significant impact on the activities mothers performed as well as their quality of life. Although it can be argued that the most common role of mothers has always been to bear children, by the mid eighteen hundreds women began to have more choices on when and 0how often to have children. Another big change was that in later centuries women had the time and were encouraged to raise their children themselves rather than leaving their children to their own devices or sending them to be raised by strangers. While these changes in the roles of mothers are not the most obvious changes that occurred during this time period, they were certainly significant to all those that they affected.
The lifestyle of people in the Victorian Era was different to everyday life. In the Victorian Times. there were three different groups of people. These were the upper class - rich and powerful people who don't need to work, middle class. have to work to support but not physical work, and lower/working.
In the Victorian Era motherhood was something that was idealized. A social responsibility that was once such a private matter was now something to be learned. Society had their expectations on how your children should be raised and how they should behave. During this era it was the mother’s duty to raise their children and it was the father’s duty to provide for the family. Mothers who had to work for living were labelled as irresponsible and neglectful. Meanwhile the fathers who worked all the time and really had nothing to do with their children were applauded because they were “providing” for their family. Infant death was also believed that it could be avoided if poor mother’s breast fed their babies and were taught better baby care. During that time fatherhood held an ambiguous position. Being a father showed your commitment to your home and family. A man with no children had no reason to have good work ethic because he had no one to pass on the family name

But this all changes in the 1920s, women got the right to vote and began working from the result of work they have done in the war. Altogether in the 1920s women's roles have changed drastically.
The Victorian Era started when Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837 and ended roughly the day she died in 1901. Victorian England “was a strictly patriarchal society” (Yildirim 2). It is common knowledge that during the Victorian era men and women had their own specific roles. It is also common knowledge to know that men had complete legal and economical control over the women (Mitchell 1, 142). Women were expected to stay at home to keep house and take care of the children.
In Puritan communities, women’s roles comprised of two (2) features. The first being they are “the weaker vessel in both body and mind” and men should not expect anything of significance from them. The second was the way they manipulate their lives to avoid their born roles and fulfill their own desires and aspirations. Men readily accepts their superiority to women and so they are the community leaders. With this, they are ashamed of women and react harshly when women object to these gender roles.
The Victorian Era is a remarkable time in history with the blooming industries, growing population, and a major turnaround in the fashion world. This era was named after Queen Victoria who ruled United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from June 1837 until she passed away 64 years later in January 1901.When Victoria received the crown, popular respect was strikingly low. The lack of respect for the position she had just come into did not diminish her confidence. Instead she won the hearts of Britain with her modesty, grace, straightforwardness, and her want to be informed on the political matters at hand even though she had no input. She changed Britain into a flourishing country. She also impacted how women interacted during this era based on her personality.
To start with, some information is in order about the Victorian Period itself. Queen Victoria, England’s longest reigning monarch, sat on the throne from 1837 to 1901. The span of time is referred to as the Victorian Period (Abrams 1860). At the death of Queen Victoria, her subjects reacted in such a way that they rebelled against many of the ideas put forward during her reign. Even her own country recognized her life and rule as a distinct historical period separated from the rest (Abrams 1861).

The people living in England that were ruled by Queen Victoria at the time, were called “Victorians”, this congregation of people were also said to be very “stuffy, prudish, hypocritical and narrow minded” (Everett).
