Geopolitics is having an interest in or taking over land because of its strategic location, products, or resources. Geopolitics would play a specifically important role when it came to end of the Ottoman Empire. At the time, the Ottoman Empire had become the "sick man of Europe", it was a dying empire. While at the height of its power, it controlled massive amounts of land, many of these lands were wanted by other empires for their own purposes. The Ottoman Empire was once known as the greatest of empire of all time before its unfortunate decline in 1914. The Ottoman Empire was being destroyed by nationalism and imperialism. All of the different ethnic groups were breaking free all at once. The vast Ottoman Empire had controlled a large range of land, many of which would attract other world powers to its strategic locations. In other words, geopolitics would play a vital role in the conquering of the empire. The Ottoman Empire controlled controlled access to the Mediterranean and Atlantic sea trade. This was an important range of land for landlocked countries. A landlocked country is a country which is completely bordered by land, or they lie by closed seas. These landlocked countries would have to use go through the Ottoman lands in order to get to the sea trade ports. Russia was an example of one of the many empires which wanted Ottoman land. Russia wanted to gain control over the exports across the Black Sea and into the Mediterranean Sea for the purpose of their grain exports. Russia tried everything to win over Ottoman land; for instance, they attempted alliances, friendships, and winning over favor. However, their plans did not work; instead, they would end up waging war against the Ottoman
