In the making of the United States of America, many wars have taken place to provide the freedom the country has today. Two important wars include The American Revolution and the American Civil War. Within these wars were many people who fought that are rarely mentioned today, and some were not even recognized during or shortly after the war. Every single one of these people played a role in the development of the country, whether they are acknowledged or not.

Because the war was fought between the North and South of the country, someone had to win in order to progress as a Nation. Minorities helped both the North and South in many ways. Native Americans, African Americans, and women all helped in the Civil War, whether they were on the front line or aiding the wounded. All played an important role in the making of the country. The Civil War consisted of many soldiers, roughly 179,000 African American soldiers, 28,693 Native Americans, and about 250 women fought in the war. (Civil War Facts). That is only counting the brave people who fought in the war. Many men and women helped with other jobs, such as assisting the wounded, gathering supplies, and delivering messages. Native Americans in the Civil War provided different outlooks on war and helped each side with numbers. They were determined to make peace with the new colonists in order to help them in the future. They were hoping they could become great trading partners so both may benefit from sharing land. They knew their land would no longer be theirs as the country continued to grow. In order for them to have a chance in the future, they needed to help the nation and make peace with them. Though the Native Americans were in a “lose-lose” situation, they fought hard. “No other group sacrificed as much for the survival and triumph of the United States as did its Indian allies.” (Native Americans in the Civil War). It is disheartening to think the country took most of the land the Natives owned even though they aided us in Civil War. With their help, the country was able to become a better and more successful
