The Vengeful Soul A little less than two centuries ago a writer named Edgar Allan Poe, wrote “The Cast of Amontillado.” The main character and protagonist of the story are Montresor, he plots and masterminds a plan to rid the world of his enemy, Fortunato. Through his actions and the diabolical plot that Poe creates, Montresor is portrayed as deceitful, methodical, and vengeful character, Montresor is portrayed as a deceitful character in the work “The cast of Amontillado.” Montresor had endured many indignities from Fortunato, so he devised a plan to stop these indignities. Montresor deceived Fortunato into willingly attending him into the catacombs on the false pretenses that he had obtained an Amontillado. When he lured Fortunato into the catacombs, he began to cough, Montresor fooled Fortunate into believing that he cared a great deal for his health. This is shown on pg.4 of “The cast of Amontillado” when Montresor says ““We will go; your health is precious.”” However, the author has made it very clear that Montresor could not be bothered with the condition of Fortunato. …show more content…

Montresor completely masterminds a brilliant plan to orchestrate the perfect murder. Montresor 2uses Fortunato’s weakness which is wine to lure into the catacombs as stated in the text “ He had a weak point --this Fortunato,” “He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine.” Montresor casually arranged each part of his plan. He knew how to get Fortunato into the catacombs without suspicion. He knew to bring extra alcohol so he could dull Fortunato’s senses to point of delusion and incomprehension. He even knew to plan what he was going to use when he chained Fortunato to the wall and what he would use to wall up the catacombs. Each act was premeditated and formulated to the absolute
