I’ve never given much thought to how my life would be different if I grew up deaf; therefore, I was excited to gain an insight into how a person’s lifestyle could be different or similar to my own. What did he/she struggle with, what did he/she gain, how does the individual go about his or her everyday life being deaf?
In the video ”What It’s Like to be Deaf” the speaker, D’Angelo Brown, explains his experiences growing up in his household. At the beginning of the video, he explained what I had already guessed, that communication between him and his family was a struggle, specifically, with Brown trying to express his needs and his family not really understanding how they could accommodate their son. When Brown was able to read the captions a whole new world was open to him, which was wonderful, but worrisome. I wondered what he would have done if he didn’t take that initiative to steal the T.V. I could deduce that he would have been at a significant disadvantage. Such as, when he received a TTY, Brown loved that he could talk to his friends and he believed that he had something that only few deaf kids had access to, lo and behold he was way out of the loop and everyone one of his deaf friends had one. And the first foundation is understanding and empathy to what a deaf child needs from infancy to adulthood to navigate this world of majority hearing individuals. Second foundation, never isolate, if whatever reason something needs to be said and someone doesn’t want them to know wait until they aren’t near. And third, respect, deaf people come into the world knowing the etiquette of the hearing world, but hearing doesn’t have the same knowledge until someone corrects them. Therefore, don’t assume anything in regards to deaf culture ask, and sometime it common courtesy across the board across on what is and isn’t respectful.
