Living life to the fullest; an idea present since the time of Eliot and still true today. During the Modernist period, TS Eliot brought that aspect to life through his writing. The Modernism era went from the 20th century through about 1965. According to Carruth, “His poems were for over two decades the chief instruments in popularizing among writers the techniques of symbolism, the desiderata of control and precision in the use of language, and the notion of poetic form as a dynamically mobile structure” (Carruth). His writing not only influenced authors of that time period, but also future generations. According to Spurr, “The infinitives in this passage...conform to the poem 's widespread use of transitive verbs of direct action in expressing the speaker 's violent impulse to combat the forces of disorder” (Spurr). Prufrock does battle some type of mental disorder, which may be a reason he could never do anything worth remember. He might have been too caught up in fighting his disorder. One song that stands out would be “One Day” by Irish band Kodaline. This song almost serves a warning to not end up like Prufrock. “Oh, life passes you by don 't waste your time on your own” (A-Z Lyrics, 16-18). The song possesses the similar theme of wasting time and telling its audience to live life to the fullest and do something in life worth remembering. “Too shy to say that you need help, You and everybody else” (A-Z Lyrics, 14-15). The theme of both of these pieces is not uncommon. Many songs and other writers today still use this theme. In conclusion, Eliot uses metaphor, allusion, and point of view to convey the theme of wasting time in his famous poem, “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock”.
