The book I have chosen for my independent reading assignment is “Dying To Tell Me” by Sherryl Clark. This book is a horror/mystery novel set in Manna Creek, Australia. This story is a fast paced mystery with thoughtful, realistic family relationships, along with a police dog named King who forms a protective relationship with the family, who work together to solve a local mystery. It is a depressing/scary novel as it contains a fair amount of jumpy chapters which keeps the audience at the edge of their sit. The main compilation in this book is the journey of the characters through the mystery of the past in Manna Creek. This novel is suitable for years 9-11.

Since the start of this quarter I have been reading the novel Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight and I am currently on 153. This book is about Amelia Barron and her alleged suicide. Right before Amelia jumped from the roof of her private school, she was caught cheating on a test. Amelia’s mother, Kate, is in disbelief that her sweet, perfect, obedient daughter would turn recalcitrant, and in even more disbelief that her daughter would commit suicide. Yoknapatawpha County is a fictional county made up by William Faulkner in which As I Lay Dying takes place in; this is now the third novel to take place here. As I Lay Dying was one of the last novels written in the 1920’s by William Faulkner and within fifty-nine chapters, this novel features a unique narration of fifteen different first person narrators. Each chapter is written from that particular character’s perspective telling their version of what is happening in the novel, making this not only an interesting take on narration but a compelling read as well. Faulkner uses the characters use of language to help us identify and see glimpses into the lives of the Bundren family; through this we can understand the revenge and secrets from within the characters that is blind to the most if not all-remaining characters within the novel.

Faulkner shows his talent by uses different scenarios, which makes the book not only comedic but informational on the human mind. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner is a great book that illustrates great themes and examples. Faulkner illustrates different character and theme dynamics throughout the entire novel, which makes the book a humorous yet emotional roller coaster. Faulkner illustrates the sense of identity, alienation, and the results of physical and mental death to show what he thinks of the human mind.
Often when a person suffers through a tragic loss of a loved one in his or her life they never fully recover to move on. Death is one of hardest experiences a person in life ever goes through. Only the strong minded people are the ones that are able to move on from it whereas the weak ones never recover from the loss of a loved one. In the novel The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, character Billy Ansel – having lost his family serves as the best example of brokenness after experiencing death. Whether it is turning to substance abuse, using his memory to escape reality or using Risa Walker as a sexual escape, Billy Ansel never fully recovers from the death of his twins and his wife. This close analysis of Billy’s struggle with death becomes an important lesson for all readers. When dealing with tragedies humans believe they have the moral strength to handle them and move on by themselves but, what they do not realize is that they need someone by their side to help them overcome death. Using unhealthy coping mechanism only leads to life full of grief and depression.
Toni Morrison’s Beloved tells a story of a loving mother and ex-slave who takes drastic measures to protect her children which later affect her entire life. In contrast, William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying goes through the life of the Bundren’s after their mother passes away and their journey to get her coffin to Jefferson. The bond between a mother and her children is chronicled in these novels. Both Faulkner and Morrison explain how the influence of a mother can affect how a child grows and matures through her love and actions.
In As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner uses the characters Anse and Cash, and a motif/symbol in "My mother is a fish," to reveal the psychological and societal problems of the twenties and thirties. Written as soon as the panic surrounding the stock market in 1929 started, Faulkner is reported as having, “took one of these [onion] sheets, unscrewed the cap from his fountain pen, and wrote at the top in blue ink, 'As I Lay Dying.' Then he underlined it twice and wrote the date in the upper right-hand corner"(Atkinson 15) We must take care to recognize Faulkner not as a man of apathy, but one of great compassion and indignation at the collapse of the economic foundation of the U.S. This is central in appreciating the great care with which he describes the desolation and poor landscape of Yoknapatawpha County, which is where As I Lay Dying takes place.
I would recommend this book to a friend because this book is a great book all around. This book has good suspense even though it might seem like a kids book.
Gaines creates a great imbalance of power between Jefferson, Grant and Sheriff Guidry. The power imbalance between these three influences the theme of “A Lesson Before Dying”. The theme of this book is to defy labels and judgement. Sheriff Guidry has ultimate power over both men simply because he is an authoritative figure. Guidry thinks that Jefferson should die the way he is: animalistic and naive. When Jefferson and Grant shed their metaphorical skins of the conflicted teacher and dumb criminal, Guidry worries that the power has shifted. The two men began denying the labels society has stuck on them, and they were conspiring to make a change.” You’re a human being Jefferson, you’re a man.” (Gaines 83). There are many recurring themes in the book the Catcher in the Rye. One of the most recurring themes is Death. At times Holden feels like his innocence is slipping away as he gets older. He tries to preserve it in the other children while he is stuck in an in-between state of adulthood and childhood. Also, sometimes within the story he wishes for death itself instead of becoming a “phony” like all of the other adults. His childhood and innocence is represented by his little brother, Allie, who resides within his mind. Whenever he feels as if he is disappearing, he talks to Allie as if he is still alive. The book I chose to read was Reckless by Cornelia Funke. The book’s genre is fantasy. When I first began reading this book I really did not enjoy it or understand it, but it soon started to get interesting. The characters became interesting and the plot started to grab my attention. Soon I had to finish reading it, but the end was really disappointing.
For my book I chose to read The Body by Stephen King. This novel is about four young boys taking a journey to find a body somewhere in the woods that is at the county line. This story is about more than just four boys going on an adventure its about them becoming closer to each other and learning real life lessons along the way. The four boys are all going into their first year of middle school so this is a time in their life when they learn things that will help them in life.
