The short story "The Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allan Poe is about a character named Prince Prospero, who tries to stay away from a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey and after several months hosts a party where everyone dies from the plague (cite). I strongly believe that the tone of short story is dark and ominous, given that the story revolves around a gruesome deadly plague, called the Red Death (cite). I feel that “The Masque of the Red Death” and its dark and ominous tone reflects the tragic events that took place in Edgar Allan Poe’s life, for the reason that throughout his life he was surrounded by misfortune. In the story Prince Prospero decorated the rooms of his house in single colors (cite). The first room was decorated in blue, with blue stained glass windows, followed by the next rooms being: purple, green, orange, white, and violet, “These windows were of stained glass whose color varied in accordance with the prevailing hue of the …show more content…

In the short story nature is used in the form of the Red Death and described as, “No pestilence has ever been so fatal, or so hideous,” (cite). The Red Death symbolizes nature in its pure form and how powerful it is to overcome mankind, and its creations, “He had come like a thief, in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall. And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay,” (cite). Lastly, the story also demonstrates celebration of the individual, because it revolves around Prince Prospero and his mission to stay away from the Red Death by locking himself inside his abbey, “This wall had gates of iron. The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts,”
