Some people may not see the importance of integrity in the workplace, yet as a Surgical Tech, integrity is a part of our surgical conscience. Integrity as defined by dictionary.com “adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness to moral character; honesty.” Integrity defined by me starts with honesty, knowing when you’re wrong and admitting so and last but not least doing the right thing, even when nobody's watching. What’s the difference between honesty and integrity? “You can be the most honest person in the world - saying things as are - and still not have integrity to be believable. And although if you look at the dictionary, you’ll find that integrity means soundness of moral character, as well as honesty - there’s more to integrity than honesty alone.” What integrity means to me is to do the right thing, even when no one is watching, to be honest and to admit when you are wrong. For me, integrity comes into play when in lab class. We are asked to treat our lab class as if it were really the operating room, therefore if we make a mistake we are to fix that mistake as if it were real life. As a future ST I will show my integrity while on extern by taking everything the preceptor says into consideration, being open to learning things differently and speaking up when someone isn’t following aseptic technique. Thinking about going out on extern is a bit frightening, being in a new environment and around new people. I remind myself why I chose to do this, and think of how long I’ve waited for this time to come. I’ve worked so hard for and it’s finally time to put all the skills I have learned to use. It eases me a bit to know I will have a preceptor to show me the ropes and answer any questions I may have. I will be open to learning new things, because the way I learned is definitely not the only way there
