There are many differences between Ralph and Jack in the Lord of the Flies. Ralph is very calm boy said to be the natural leader. Jack is aggressive and ready to kill at any moment. Ralph preferred to be more civilized by building shelters and create a fire for smoke signals to try and get rescued by passing ships, Ralph states, “we need to build shelters.” Jack is quite the opposite he wants to hunt to try and release his inner beast, his own savageness, Jack stated in the book, “we need to get meat, we want to hunt.” Through the beginning of the story both boys have tremendously different opinions on how the island should be run. In “Lord of the Flies” Ralph has the goal of getting himself and the rest of the tribe off the island. His plan to execute it is by making a signal fire that a passing ship or boat will see to rescue them. Ralph realizes that maintaining order within their tribe is crucial to their survival and chance of being saved. As chief of their group, he assigns Jack the leader of the hunters. He then puts them in charge of keeping the signal fire lit. During this process, Jack and his boys get distracted from keeping it lit as they attempt to kill a pig. After a couple of hunts, Jack and his boys finally kill a pig and return in cheers. As they get back, Ralph gets mad at Jack saying “You and your blood Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home” (70). Ralph is angry with Jack because he realizes as leader that he has to make sure everyone understands their main goal, and are able to focus on that by blocking out distractions. William Golding’s book, Lord of the flies, begins with the central character stuck in a jungle of which he knows little about. Ralph as we later find out his name, is the athletic, level-headed, leader of the boys on the island. He is the emotional leader of the group, and he has a major influence on all of the other characters. Ralph is used as a sort of reminder of the old world. He reminds the boys that there are laws and rules and everyone must abide for survival. When the boys realize that they are not at home anymore and they being to rely on their natural instincts they lose the society that man-kind has created. Ralph is trying hard to keep the boys together because he knows if they are not the chances of being rescued become lesser.
Firstly, a notable trait that distinguishes Ralph from the other children on the island is his ability to think more rationally. As the boys become influenced by Jack’s rule, they regress into uncivilized savages that lack discipline. Whereas, Ralph is wisely able to keep the boys under order, which is particularly apparent through the meetings that he regularly holds. It is in those meetings that circumstances can be confronted with rationality and equanimity. For example, Ralph instructs the boys with, “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. One’s personality changes over time when it is necessary to adapt to one’s environment or when one suffers or even thrives from another’s actions. In the Lord of the Flies, both Jack and Ralph underwent changes in their personalities, which also affected their relationship. It was obvious in the beginning that Jack would not get along easily with Ralph and Piggy because he ridiculed Piggy for his weight and awkwardness. However, Jack felt threatened because Ralph was voted chief. By saying “I ought to be chief… because I’m chapter chorister and head boy,” Jack’s overconfidence was shown (Golding 22). On the other hand, there was Ralph, who was taller and more attractive than Jack was, and after being elected leader, he gave part of his power to Jack, displaying his generosity. This was when “Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking,” showing the beginning of their friendship (Golding 23). Ralph, starting off as a strong, demanding leader, was most adult-like out of everyone else; he was very concerned about the younger children, shown when he says “‘We need shelters as a sort of—’ ‘Home’” (Golding 52). Also in the beginning, while they were exploring the island, their “eyes shining, mouths open, triumphant, they savored the right of domination. They were lifted up; were friends” (Golding 29). Their friendship was already growing at this point. A little later, Jack had made a pathetic attempt to stick a pig, but he let the pig go free. He made an excuse that he “was choosing a place… just waiting for a moment to decide where to stab him;” however, “they knew very well why he hadn’t: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood” (Golding 31). Then he “snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk... [and] looked around fiercely, daring them to contradict,” expressing not only his violent nature, but also his inability to kill (Golding 31). This also foreshadowed his savage hunting. In chapter two, Ralph calls a second meeting, when he makes up the rule that whoever is holding the conch gets to speak. This demonstrated that he was trying to establish order in some way; however, he was also shown to be a bit irresponsible, when he said that they “want to have fun” (Golding 37). When they were all making a fire by bringing up wood, “Ralph found himself alone on a limb with Jack and they grinned at each other, sharing this burden” (Golding 39).
Initially, Ralph stands as the dominant factor in the story until Jack first tries to prove his authority. During the group’s first pig hunt, Jack’s actions increase the concentration of his malice on the island, making more acidic for just a moment, until every goes back to a basic normality under the buffer of Ralph’s dominion. Then, as more instances of Jack’s outbursts come about, the story reaches its equivalence point as Jack takes a stance against the rule of Ralph in asking “Who thinks Ralph oughtn’t to be chief?” on Pg.182 (Golding 182). At this stage in the Jack/Ralph reaction, the authority of Jack starts to equal the authority of Ralph and the level of malevolence on the island. This point stands as the deciding line between whether the story will progress under Ralph’s guidance (making a basic solution) or Jack’s savagery (making an acidic one). Sadly, the reaction proceeds in the direction of the latter. The solution representing the island of Lord of the Flies turns blood red to symbolize how the concentration of brutality has overtaken the the concentration of civility. Of course though, this ending remained inevitable, because, according to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, the interaction between these two characters was destined end in an increase of chaos and
... Ralph has proven to have a much better understanding of people and their needs and this makes him a much better leader than Jack. With Ralph's understanding of the need for order and rules, he improves the condition where the boys are living in. Jack's condition was horrible. Also, Jack treated the boys very badly and like he better. Ralph, on the other hand treated the boys all equally and with respect. Ralph's priority to get off the island shows his wisdom and ability to make good decisions. Although Jack was popular on the island for the short amount of time the boys were there, he would not have been popular for much longer. He does not have any of the qualities that a good leader should have and turned himself and the rest of the boys into complete losers. Jack's plan would have soon faded but if Ralph had become leader, his wisdom would last much longer.
The main character is Ralph, a boy of "twelve years and a few months," is the first character the reader meets in the novel (Golding 10). The narrator is direct when describing Ralph's physical characteristics: "You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil," (Golding 10). The narrator's first description of Ralph is his fair hair. Within direct characterization and straightforward statements, the narrator includes indirect comments on Ralph's nature. For example, the narrator implies that Ralph has a kind nature by saying his eyes and mouth bear no evil when talking about Ralph's build. Ralph is implied to be the largest and oldest boy on the island when the narrator notes, "The decrease in size, from Ralph down, was gradual," (Golding 59).
In literature, as in life, people struggle with the principles and beliefs they hold. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph represents order, civilization, and leadership. On the island, Ralph is conflicted with his principles and beliefs that he has acquired over the years of living in a civilized and humane world and is caught between holding on to them or submitting to the barbarism that seems to have taken over the other boys.
Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos.
In William Golding’s novel, the Lord of the Flies, even though Ralph became chief of the stranded boys, Jack eventually rose to power through scare tactics, confidence, determination, and control. When Jack demonstrated his leadership skills, it was evident that he was superior to Ralph and would use his sense of Social Darwinism (survival of the fittest) and his oratory skills to surpass and isolate Ralph completely. Regardless of Ralph’s strengths, such as his conch, democratic maneuvers, firm motives, and kind demeanor, Jack’s mere presence ousted Ralph’s chances of taking effective leadership. By using propaganda against Ralph, gaining support from his partisan tribe members, and overpowering Ralph through his persuasive techniques and appearance, Jack clearly demonstrated how his leadership of the island was inevitable.
We’re strong- we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat- !’”(Golding 99). This passage states Jack’s need is to kill and this is the foundation of the rebellion against Ralph’s rules and respect. This states the desperation and the hate for Ralph and his position as the chief. This passion for hunting and killing, for Jack, was from the beginning of the novel Lord of the Flies since the time Jack wanted the duty as the hunter till the end of the novel when Ralph was being hunted. Mainly his fellow hunters appreciate this hunting skill from Jack and to get the littluns attention, he proceeds with his speech about hunting the beastie whom the littluns fear the most. Another advantage for Jack is the pig feasts, which many boys desire to have their dinner to fill their hunger thoughts. To bring the boys to his control, he extorted the boys saying in order to deserve a piece of meat they must listen to him only. Many boys already have interest on feasting upon the pigs again and they are addicted to meat. Lastly, the minor advantage for Jack is Ralph himself. Throughout William Golding's novel Lord of the Flies there is an ever-present conflict between two characters. Ralph's character combines common sense with a strong desire for civilized life. Jack, however, is an antagonist with savage instincts, which he cannot control. Ralph's goals to achieve a team unit with organization are destroyed by Jack's actions and words that are openly displayed to the boys. The two leaders try to convince the boys that their way of survival is correct.
