Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner” is powerful novel that tells the story of a young boy’s interpersonal and intrapersonal struggles on his journey to adulthood. In this novel one can find many themes regarding ideas such as love, forgiveness, and redemption. These themes are reflected by the characters of the story, as well as its plot and setting. During war-times, false messages of discrimination and hatred spread like a cancer. These messages relate to a central theme that is evident in the novel, the idea that morality is the first casualty of war. This theme is shown many times throughout the story, however, the rape of Hassan, the behaviour of the Russian soldier, and the actions of Assef, are the most understandable forms of the aforementioned
Throughout the thought provoking and eye opening narrative, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini provides a vivid and in depth story told through the eyes of a privileged young narrator who is forced to come of age in the capital of Afghanistan. As a story told from a different cultural perspective,culture and morals in this society are different from foreign beliefs. A reader will not fully comprehend The Kite Runner without discerning the differences between social classes and understanding the importance of honor in the Afghanistan culture.

Everyone has something in the past that is shameful, embarrassing and regrettable that is kept present daily. Whether this event happened during childhood, adolescence or early adulthood, this event could haunt and have shaped that person’s life into what he or she is today. In a similar way, in the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is shaped by a tragic and eventful past that has shaped Amir’s, Baba’s, and Hassan’s life. Amir is the narrator and protagonist of the story and throughout the entire novel, he faces enormous guilt following the horrible incident that happened to his closest friend, Hassan. This incident grows on Amir and fuels his quest for redemption, struggling to do whatever it takes to make up for his mistakes. In Hosseini’s novel, kites highlight aspects of Afghanistan’s ethnic caste system and emphasizes the story’s major themes of guilt, redemption and freedom.
In Khaled Hosseini’s novel “The Kite Runner,” he illustrates a fine line between what is defined as morally good and evil. During their lives as kids, Amir and Hassan had always been close, but there had always been one problem. Amir was the son of a rich and powerful Pashtun man who was almost always given everything he wanted, while Hassan was a Hazara boy who had spent his life serving Amir and his family with his father. Although the two of them seemed to always be inseparable when they played games or flew kites, there was always the defining factor of who they really are, a servant and his master.
In Hosseini’s novel, The Kite Runner, mistakes and their confrontation is a major theme. The Kite Runner takes us on the journey of life as an immigrant through the eyes of refugee Amir. It is through the mistakes of Amir and his family and friends that the novel develops. The most significant and central mistake in the novel is of Amir not standing up for Hassan whilst he is being raped. Although this mistake is the most significant and central one, I will also look into two others; Baba cheating with Ali’s wife and Soraya and her previous marriage. To confront our mistakes we may try to ‘redeem ourselves’ by doing good that we believe may make up for this mistake or even just getting this mistake out in the open and talking about it. The Kite Runner shows that people who ‘bottle’ their secrets up as the characters seem to be ‘haunted’ by their past until they confront their mistakes.
The Kite Runner is a mix of an epic and a tragedy. I will argue how the text highlights a Hero’s Journey with characteristics of a tragedy.

The allusion to the Holocaust allows Asseff to be the connection between Afghanistan and the Holocaust as a result of superiority ideal’s depicted by Elie Wiesel in Night. The comparison depicts how due to superiority ideal’s individual 's morals can be altered in which they are willing to turn on their friends; Pashtuns and Hazaras; Aryans vs Jews.
