Statement of Purpose The purpose of this statement is to meet the Simmons criteria to enroll in the MSWP. Therefore, a description of the Social Work profession and its core values is a profession designed to provide guidance, counseling and to advocate for the disenfranchised people of all genders, races, ethnicities and cultures, to facilitate their ability to achieve a better quality of life. This facilitation could be in areas such as mental health, care for the elderly, and placement of children in foster homes, all in an effort to improve quality of life. Around the age of fifty, she became unable to work because of physical and mental disabilities. She became overwhelmed with obtaining information on who to contact, what services were available, and how to complete the appropriate form. Therefore, it became my responsibility to assist with her care. Her debilitating illnesses are dementia and cancer. She also suffered a stroke, which rendered her immobile. Caring for her allowed me to see there were others in the situation, too old to care for themselves and in need of assistance. I began helping the elderly members in the church and other family members who had elderly parents that needed assistance with obtaining the appropriate care. It became a passion. My first interest was in the aging community, soldiers and their family member. However, after obtaining education on the different social welfare area, they are becoming an interest. As stated above the working with the elderly became a passion for me. There were elderly people living in their homes not knowing the care they could receive if a person of knowledge would advocate on behalf. However, working with soldier for twenty some years also offer gratification and it also allowed me to work with the different cultures and ethnicity groups. Also, the first practicum was in a woman’s correctional facility. There were women incarnated for criminal acts for five to life, and some were repeater, who were released but returned because they could not obtain employment because of a federal record. There were some who did not have a high school diploma nor did the institution offer it due to funding. Therefore, they became what the criminal system calls repeaters. There are so many disenfranchise people it makes it very difficult to decide what direction to go in. Therefore, my intent is to be well educated in the social work profession whereas, I will be equip to assist in any arena, I chose to work with and eventually establish a non-profit organization that will assist the poor or know which organization to direct the client.
