One of the greatest accomplishments and innovations of human history thus far is the invention of the electric refrigerator. Such a simple concept has literally changed how the entire world stores food and has saved millions of lives in the process. Refrigeration as we know it has only been around since the 1930’s, and in less then a hundred years has been greatly taken for granted. Since the influence of electrical engineering in the modern refrigerator, refrigeration has gone from storing food in an ice cellar to being able to have two dedicating refrigeration units with controllable temperatures and even an ice machine attached. Without electricity modern refrigeration would be drastically different, using instead previous refrigeration …show more content…

In warmer climates such as Egypt they used techniques as evaporative cooling, “if water is placed in shallow trays during the cool tropical nights, its rapid evaporation can cause ice to form in the trays, even if the air does not fall below freezing temperatures”. Although refrigeration developed in the 18th century it wasn’t until the mid-19th century when the first refrigerator built using vapor technology was build by American John Gorrie in 1844. A few years later commercial refrigeration was introduced as well as vapor compression technology which was the beginning of our modern refrigeration. Later that century ammonia was popularized as the evaporation chemical in refrigeration. All the trials and tribulations of refrigeration where all stepping stones to the 20th century and the introduction of modern refrigeration as we know it …show more content…

Businesses transport their products every day, a lot of these products require refrigeration which is now easier with modern electric refrigerators. These trucks are cooled with the same technology in one’s fridge which is powered by the car battery. Thanks to food transportation business innovation the people’s diets had changed, adding a lot more variety, food prices dropped due to availability, and supermarkets rose to power since they were able to buy in bulk and edged out local stores. Refrigerated transport was another logical direction to move with refrigerator technology. Without refrigerated transport society would not be able to experience the luxuries that we have today such buying cougar gold cheese in Vancouver when it is made in
