Being born and raised in a developing country has its own pros and cons. I belong to a middle class Muslim family form Karachi, Pakistan. Growing up, I realized that challenging our own society and culture, as a young aspiring woman, would be no less than a battle. I am lucky that my Father never considered me less than his son. He once said, said “ I will never stop you from dreaming, Instead, I will always stand beside you to make sure your dreams come true”. It was not a norm for girls to leave the country for education. They get married at the earliest convenience and give up their careers. They are expected to look after the house and have children. I believe it’s the respect for my seniors that has brought me so far in my career, a quality I inherited. I can easily adapt to different environments proved by my work in all fields of medicine. Working at the Civil Hospital of Karachi I learned how to function in an under resourced environment and then working in USA I learned how to function in a well-resourced environment. I want to bring new ideas to the field of medicine. Einstein has always fascinated me. I am not saying I want to be Einstein, but I can be an inventor. I plan to indulge myself in state of the art research opportunities and publish papers and keep the field of medicine cultivating. After completing my residency, I plan to continue my training as a fellow in a sub specialty, which I have yet to decide. I will be taking interest in every rotation in the residency to see what attracts me the most. In the future, I see my self as a part of a teaching hospital where I can grow my practice and keep myself connected to an academic institution.
