Money Grabbers Money is what buys people's dreams, it runs the world. People love money so much they work 40 hours a week to get it. They give up seeing their families so they can work to pay for them to live. People do this for the majority of their lives, from the ages of 20 - 60 years old in the hope of their retirement. Money controls everything in people's lives, their happiness, their presentation, and their futures. People may control how they get their happiness, but their employers decide how much they get. In society today the idea that happiness is the most important thing in people’s lives is what the people prefer to believe. If someone were to ask single parents what they want more than anything, the most implied answer would be money. These parents would not say money outright. They would say something like having more time to spend with their children, having enough money to buy food for their children, or being able to give their children better futures. These would imply the need for more money. These single parents and even married parents living below the poverty line know how important money is in everyday life; more than people that might not realize it if they never lived below the poverty line. People may say “get a better education” or “get a better job”, neither of these is easy. For people to get a better job people need a better education, but a better education requires more money, but to get that money people must have a good paying job. A good college can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000 plus, depending on the major. This endless cycle results in people never rising above the poverty line. Money controls people, it brings with it good fortune for people and the people's children. With more money comes more opportunities for people to give back to their communities. Money is something that can either be used for the greater good of society, or it can be contorted into something that is detrimental to society, it all depends on whose hands that money happens to fall into. Human tendencies begin to change once people come to have money, the lavish and selfish lifestyle begins. Entitlement comes with having money because money gives people what they want which makes people think they are entitled to get everything they want. Happiness is a feeling adults experience when they receive a gift, win something, and various other reasons, but does money buy this happiness everyone experiences? Don Peck and Ross Douthat claim money does buy happiness, but only to a point in their article which originally appeared in the Atlantic Monthly (252). Throughout their article, reasons on why money can sometimes buy happiness are explained. While some of the reasons given are effective, not all are satisfying answers for adults working diligently to make a living. Money is a part of everyone’s life, yet it is not always the cause of happiness.
Again in the documentary Bill Moyers comes and visits the families after everyone is all grown up, he gets to see what their daily jobs are and their new families. Only one child out of both families made it through college and received a degree. Even with a degree none of the children were successful and were all going through the same struggle their parents faced while raising them. Its all a cycle until someone becomes financially successful to break the chain and from there comes positive results. According from the film, lesson Number four “Many people think that happiness comes from having more power or more money.” For example, Edward is a businessman in China who always felt happier by having a lot of money. He always uses his money on any situations he wants, and people treat him like a boss. That’s why when Hector asks Edward, “What is your happiness?” Edward said, “Money is my happiness.” It shows money is a part of life and a part of the happiness. It can buy anything you want, and it also can help you easily becomes VIP in restaurants or clubs. That’s why people want to work hard become rich. People in general, are born a blank slate; and as they grow older the economy works to affect them in numerous ways. As a result, this often makes anyone with wealth fall under the stereotype as selfish/greedy. Broadly, money no matter how much, changes us, and to some extent defining us. Thus, creating multiple point of views and changes on this certain matter.
When none of us has ever come across such words and formulas, none of the great personalities has ever mentioned it, then who the hell has instilled it in our minds that money brings happiness. But among this debate one question still raises its head - What is happiness? Happiness is not actually leading a luxurious life but the luxury of living a life. Happiness is not actually about expanding your business, but it lies in expanding the horizons of life. Happiness is not having a meal in the most famous restaurant but to have it with your most beloved family. It does not lie in attending honorable parties but to attend a party with honor.
For some, happiness is all that matters. Happiness is achieved in many ways, and it doesn’t always involve money. There are many things that contribute to making a person feel happy and successful. One can feel successful without a lot of money at all. For example, feeling loved is something that makes everyone happy. Many believe that without love life is not thoroughly complete, thus never truly achieving success. Ones line of work can also affect how happy he is. Some feel that it is more important to enjoy work and get less money than it is to hate work and get paid more. Another factor in achieving psychological success is ones ability to enjoy what life gives him. There are many qualities of life that are overlooked. Everyone is dealt family and it is important to value that.
Money is necessary for so many things in life. You need it to pay your bills, buy you food, and buy you clothes. You need money to live. Money is all of those things to me, it is also a way to gain social status for many. To so many people money represents power, status and the people who have it demand respect even if they don’t deserve it. I value money a lot because it gets me the things I need and sometimes the things I want. There are times when money buys me something that makes me happy but just money in general does give me any emotions except for secure.
Money is probably one of the most important things in this world. Without it, life would be very hard. With it, you become economically stable making life would be easier in some ways. But the real question is, can money actually make someone physically and emotionally happy? There are many sides to this debate; some who say yes and others who say no. Though most people agree with the statement, “Money doesn’t buy happiness,” there is still a large amount of people who disagree with it. They believe that money does indeed buy happiness and that it’s the most important thing in the world. There is no right or wrong answer to this question, it’s just a matter of what you believe in and your values.
It’s relative income that’s important. As I’ve noted previously, money is relative. It turns out we don’t mind so much about our actual level of income, so long as we’re earning more than the other people around us. Unfortunately, as we earn more money we’re likely to be surrounded by richer people, so we often end up failing to take advantage of the positive comparison. Material goods don’t make us happy.
