Recalled to life. This is the message that Mr. Lorry sent with the messenger Jerry back to London, in Tale of Two Cities. Throughout the book, we can observe many people being recalled to life in different ways. What most of them have in common is that Lucie Manette was the one who enabled this. Sydney Carton was one who was recalled to life by Lucie and it changed his life forevermore. Lucie Manette recalled Sydney Carton to life by igniting the fact that he loved and cared for somebody and that now he had a purpose in his life.
An attribute of Sydney Carton was that he was miserable and he cared for nothing. While conversing with Charles Darnay he states, “ I a disappointed drudge, sir. I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares

He lets Dr. Manette know his true identity and that he is the nephew to the Marquis St. Evremonde. In Book The Third, Sydney Carton makes an astonishing sacrifice for the sake of principle when he fulfills his promise to Lucie Manette, his true love, that he will one day sacrifice himself for the person whom Lucie loves. All of the above sacrifices were made with the intention of keeping morals and principles high in human life. This quote shows that Carton wishes he had been a better person, and knows that he could have been as successful as Darnay if only he had applied himself to his job or found love. 		Sydney Carton has been presented as the worthless human being. He was always drunk. He did not acquire any high social position. He was always alone and lonely. Nobody loved him and nobody respected him. "I care for no man on earth, and no man on earth cares for me" said Carton (page 99). However, Sydney Carton did never cause any harm to anybody, but actually helped the people around him. Sydney Carton was physically identical to Charles Darnay. When Darnay was being prosecuted for treason against the English government, Carton allowed Mr. Stryver (the lawyer Carton worked for) to reveal him "Look well upon that gentleman, my learned friend there, and then look well upon the prisoner. How say you? Are they very like each other?" said Stryver (page 86). "My lord inquired of Mr. Stryver, whether they were next to try Mr. Carton for treason? But Mr. Stryver replied no" (Page 86). The court then released Darnay. This was one of the ways Sydney Carton presented assistance to others, and that shows that he is a good person who does not mind helping other people. After the trial Carton and Darnay met with each other, and they had a talk. Mr. Carton had told Darnay that he hated him because Lucy loved him. Couple of months after this incident, Mr. Carton asked to meet with Mr. Darnay. Carton asked Darnay to forgive him for the previous incident and also asked him to be his friend. The most dynamic character in Charles Dickens, 'A Tale of Two Cities,' appears as Sydney Carton. First, Carton presents himself as a drunk, lazy attorney, who feels as though his life has no meaning. However, Carton as well as others know deep down that his life does have true meaning. Carton professes his love to Lucie Manette. Inexplicably, Carton becomes a changed man; this important turning point molds the remainder of the novel. After he exits the den, he finds his independence. When Sydney Carton becomes enlightened, he transforms into a Christ-like figure. He begins to shoulder his way through life.
Sydney’s love for Lucie Manette changed him greatly in a positive way. One day when Sydney visited the Manette residence, he called on Lucie and pledged his love to her. After hearing this, Lucie feels nothing but compassion for Carton. He asked nothing more of Lucie than to always remember how deeply he cared for her, and that he would make any sacrifice to her or anyone dear to her. Lucie was the main reason for bringing out the new, more positive Sydney Carton.
As implied by the statement “recalled to life” Dr. Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton are all resurrected or saved. Lucie Manette saves Dr. Manette more than once. Charles Darnay is saved three times, once by Dr. Manette and twice by Sydney Carton. Sydney Carton is recalled by Lucie Manette by being opened up to having a purpose in life. All three people are saved by others. This shows to never give up on loved ones; one never knows when they will need to be recalled to life.
Sydney Carton is also shown in the novel to be somewhat immature in his actions
Sydney Carton is introduced as a pessimistic introvert who struggles with his id and superego. Although Carton’s past is never revealed in the novel, a traumatic event clearly haunts Carton and prevents him from leading a pleasant life. According to Sigmund Freud, “the memories and emotions associated with trauma” are stored in the subconscious mind because an individual cannot bear to look at these memories (Dever 202). One part of the subconscious mind is the id, or “basic desires”, of a human being (Baker 4). Carton desires to drink as a way to detach from his past, and because of his lack of emotional strength, he allows his id to take over and Carton becomes an alcoholic. Based on Carl Jung’s ideas, Carton is considered an introvert because he is described as the “idlest” of all men and is viewed by society as a worthless drunk (Dickens 91). The best example of resurrection in the entire book, is also partly ironic in that Sydney Carton must die for this resurrection to take place, when he is executed on the guillotine in Paris. However, his death is not in the book as Dicken's idea of poetic justice, as in the case of the villains, but rather as a divine reward. This is displayed when Carton decides to sacrifice himself by dying on the guillotine instead of Darnay, with "I am the Resurrection and the life." This theme of resurrection appears earlier on with Carton's prophecy, where he envisions a son to be born to Lucie and Darnay, a son who will bear Carton's name. Thus he will symbolically be reborn through Lucie and Darnay's child. This vision serves another purpose, though. In the early parts of the novel, Lucie and Darnay have a son, who dies when he is a very young child.
Sydney Carton had spent his life in carousing and getting drunk, he is referred to in the book as, “The idlest and most unpromising of men (Dickens 65)”, he had no family and the only people who really cared for him were Charles Draney and his family. Also, Sydney Carton had no one who relied on him for support. However, Charles Draney had a family who relied on him to support them, and that loved him and would be stricken by his loss. Also, if Sidney Carton had not died for Charles Draney it is unlikely that he would have changed his life any, especially because he would have felt guilty at not helping Charles Draney and by extension not helping Lucy his wife.
Both Dr. Manette’s and Sydney Carton’s needs for resurrection manifest themselves at the beginning of A Tale of Two Cities. Dr. Manette had been in the Bastille for 18 years, and he is still living like he is in prison. When M. Defarge brings Lucie to meet Dr. Manette for the first time, he says that he wants “to let a little light in here.” (XX) Dr. Manette is literally, as well as figuratively, living in the dark, this dark is inhuman. Another hint at the de-humanization of Dr. Manette is when Defarge asks Manette his name, he responds with his prison address: “One Hundred and Five, North Tower.” (XX) The reader knows this because Defarge can’t even see what’s going on due to the lack of light. Dr. Manette has little connection with the outside world. He is described as a “hopeless and lost creature” (XX) showing that he is not acting as a human being should. Dr. Manette’s resurrection is foreshadowed when Mr. Lorry dreams that he will “recall to life [refers to Dr. Manette].” (11) Sydney Carton is also in a dilapidated state at the start of A Tale of Two Cities.
