A life with a healthy heart is something that is beyond wonderful. Unfortunately, many people of the world cannot embrace this feeling. Individuals all over the world deal with heart disease. 15 million and counting, heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the U.S.
What is heart disease exactly? Heart disease is a disorder blood vessels within the heart. Heart disease cannot be cured. Once an individual is diagnosed with it, they will always have it. There are procedures that exist to help make the blood and oxygen flow towards the heart more comfortably. But unfortunately, the arteries will remain damaged, making it possible for a heart attack to occur.
“Risk factors are conditions or habits that make a person more likely to develop a disease, and can also increase the chances that an existing disease will get worse.” (“Lower Heart Disease Risk”). The main risk factors for heart disease includes the following: High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity, being physically active, and having history of heart disease in the family. Unfortunately, family history of heart disease cannot be altered in any way.
There is not an ethnic group that is not affected by heart disease. However, “the cardiovascular disease death rate among African Americans is 34 percent higher than for the overall U.S. population”. (“The Facts of Cardiovascular Disease”) African American women ages 50 and up are twice as likely as Caucasian women to be diagnosed with heart disease, and is more likely than Caucasian women to have a heart attack. Executing stretching activities helps out a lot too. Everybody stretch before they do any physical activities. Not stretching before a physical activity can result in pulling a muscle. Lifting weights is a great way to prevent heart disease also. “You can use weights, resistance bands, or your own body weight (yoga poses, for instance) for this.” ("Exercise for A Healthy Heart”). This should be done at least 2 times a week. The body should rest on other days for muscle recovery. Keep all of this up, and the heart will remain healthy, just as it should be.
Life should be happy and stress free! Ways to prevent heart disease does exist. Life itself isn’t fair without a healthy heart. The fact that heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women should be a wake up call for everyone. So get up, start jogging, and get ready for a healthy, happy life!
Cardiomyopathy, by definition, means the weakening of the heart muscle. The heart is operated by a striated muscle that relies on the autonomic nervous system to function. Cardiomyopathy is diagnosed in four different ways based on what caused the illness and exactly what part of the heart is weakened. The four main types of cardiomyopathy are dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, restrictive cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. One other category of cardiomyopathy that is diagnosed is “unclassified cardiomyopathy.” Unclassified cardiomyopathy is the weakening of the heart that does not fit into the main four categories.

There are multiple cardiovascular diseases that can occur in some people that can be moderate and some severe. A heart attack is one of them and it happens when blood is blocked by a clot, making the heart unable to pump blood throughout the body. Most of cardiovascular diseases are related to lifestyles and other non-preventable factors like ages. Coronary artery disease is a heart disease, that is caused by atherosclerosis, which is a buildup of plaque in the arteries which causes less blood flow to the heart. If plaque were to rupture it can block blood vessels which then leads to “unstable angina or a heart attack” (NHLBI). The heart also has different heart rhythms, people with bradycardia have a slow heart rate sometimes below 60. Some causes of bradycardia are increased vagal tone, SA disease, and digitoxin od. Since 1960 the age-adjusted mortality rates for cardiovascular disease (CVD) has declined steadily in the U.S. due to multiple factors, but still remains one of the primary causes of morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Greater control of risk factors and improved treatments for cardiovascular disease has significantly contributed to this decline (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2011). In the U.S. alone it claims approximately 830,000 each year and accounts for 1/6 of all deaths under the age of 65 (Weiss and Lonnquist, 2011). Based on the 2007 mortality rate data an average of 1 death every 37 seconds is due to cardiovascular disease (Lloyd-Jones et al., 2009). Controlling and reducing risk factors is crucial for saving lives. There are a number of contributing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which may appear in the form of hereditary, behavioral, and psychological, all of which ultimately converge in social or cultural factors.
Heart disease is of utmost and imperative concern in the United States. It stands at the top of the list for causes of death in the U.S., and it can be absolutely devastating (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2013). In part one of the health disparities paper, disparity in relation to heart disease was pointed out in those of low socioeconomic status and/or minorities. Part two of this paper has been streamlined towards a more specific minority: African Americans women. The reason for focusing on the African American women population is that there is a huge amount of disparity seen specifically in this group. As of 2009, African Americans as a whole had 30% more of a chance of dying from cardiovascular disease than Caucasians (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Office of Minority Health [OMH], 2012). The rate of Cardiovascular Disease in African American women specifically is higher at 48.9% than the rate of CVD in African American men at 44.4%, showing even greater disparity in African American women (American Heart Association, 2013). The goal of this paper is to identify and appraise two different articles surrounding this topic. Both articles involve an intervention in which similar community prevention programs were implemented in hopes to reduce the risk of CVD in African American women.
Heart disease can take many forms. The form of heart disease I am focusing on is coronary disease. Different arteries supply different areas of the heart with oxygenated blood. If one or more of these arteries become narrowed or clogged as a result of coronary artery disease, or atherscelorosis the artery cannot fully supply the part of the heart it is responsible for. The heart is an effective pump only when good blood supply is maintained to all heart muscles.

Just as breast cancer is killing our African American women, heart disease is also one of the major diseases killing our women. Heart disease is one of the nation’s leading causes of death in both woman and men. About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States (Americas heart disease burden, 2013). Some facts about heart disease are every year about 935,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 610,000 are a first heart attack victim. 325,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack. Also coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and loss of productivity. Deaths of heart disease in the United States back in 2008 killed about 24.5% of African Americans.
An unhealthy diet and physical inactivity can cause raised blood pressure, raised glucose levels, raised blood lipids, overweight and obesity in individuals, which puts them at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Unlike behavior risk factors, which can be controlled or modified, there are fixed risk factors like like race, gender, and age that can also contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease.
Heart disease is a terrible disease because lots of people have it. “You can prevent heart disease by eating less starch”(The Real Cause of Heart Disease). Due to eating good, healthy foods you can easily prevent heart disease. “You can prevent heart disease by eating less sugars”(The Real Cause of Heart Disease). The foods we eat everyday is the main cause of heart disease and that is why people are affected by it. People do not have healthy eating habits and they do not exercise regularly leading to the disease. The better your healthy habits the better you will be with less disease.
(Slide 2) What is Cardiomyopathy? If we break down the word we can see “Cardio” which means of the heart, “myo” which means muscle, and “pathy” which means disease, therefore cardiomyopathies are diseases of the heart muscle. (Slide 3) There are 3 main types of cardiomyopathies; hypertrophic, dilated, and restrictive. I will only be discussing dilated cardiomyopathy, which is characterized by the enlargement of the hearts chambers with impaired systolic function. It is estimated that as many as 1 of 500 adults may have this condition. Dilated cardiomyopathy is more common in blacks than in whites and in males than in females. It is the most common form of cardiomyopathy in children and it can occur at any age (CDC).
Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect your heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, heart rhythm problems, and heart defects. The major cause of this is a build-up of fatty plaques in the arteries. Plaque build-up thickens and stiffens the vessel walls, which can inhibit blood flow through the arteries to organs and tissues.

Our hearts are so important and I think sometimes, we take that for granted. Our four chambers is our life. The better you take care of it, the better it works. It is a very fascinating process and a very long process but it is important that we keep in mind how vital this fist-sized organ is to our bodies. The four chambers of our heart make up the foundation of our very existence.
