Anti-death penalty Persuasive paper
A 2008 survey revealed that eighty-eight percent of people believed that the death penalty was ineffective in deterring murder and other severe crimes (“The Death Penalty and Deterrence”). Why do countries continue to use the death penalty although such a high number of people disapprove and studies prove it to be an unsuccessful and inhumane practice? The death penalty should be abolished because not only is it more expensive, but it does not deter crime. In order to keep inmates on death row, it costs America’s taxpayers more of their hard earned money. Although some people believe that crime victim’s families will receive closure after seeing the person who harmed their loved one die, on numerous occasions, watching the criminal die leaves the family feeling worse. In one case, Ronald Carlson’s sister was murdered and he wanted vengeance for his sister’s death. Carlson watched the murderer die, but “watching the execution left me in horror and emptiness.” He sympathizes with other victims’ families and understands how they would want to see those who killed their loved ones suffer the same fate, but he thinks our justice system should not be dictated by vengeance. Carlson asked, “As a society, shouldn’t we be more civilized than the murderers we condemn? ” The families think that they will feel content knowing that that the person who murdered their loved one died, but in reality they feel empty knowing that they played a part in killing
